Position Summary The Elementary School Principal is responsible for the administration and management of the school. This position primary responsibility is to create an engaging learning environment of excellence with a focus on student growth and development, professional support and development for teachers and staff, instructional practices and strategies that yield academic progress and measurable results. This individual will lead in setting the school vision, culture, and educational standards to create a positive and safe learning environment. Direct Reports This position manages all school faculty. Visionary Leadership Invests the school community (teachers, parents, students, alumni, business partners) in a vision for student achievement which forms the basis for setting ambitious, data-driven goals to prepare students for career and college readiness; Works collaboratively with the school community to develop and maintain a shared school vision; Brings the school vision to life by using it to guide decision making about students and instructional programs; Maintains a faculty focus on developing learning experiences that will enable students to prosper in subsequent grades and as adults; Maintains open communications with the school community and effectively conveys high expectations for student learning to the community; Provides opportunities and support for collaboration, the exchange of ideas, experimentation with innovative teaching strategies, and ongoing school improvement; As an extension of the school vision, actively, engages faculty, community, and students in developing, assessing, and revising the School Improvement Plan using school data – students, faculty, and community; Fosters the integration of students into mainstream society while valuing diversity. Instructional Leadership Uses knowledge of teaching and learning to work collaboratively with the faculty and staff to implement effective and innovative teaching practices which engage students in meaningful and challenging learning experiences; Models, and promotes effective teaching strategies that enable students to apply what they learn in the classroom to real world experiences outside the classroom; Ensures teachers’ use of innovative, research-based strategies to engage students actively in solving complex problems and methods of student assessment which will enhance learning for all students; Conducts and documents frequent classroom visits and periodic observations, provides constructive feedback to faculty and staff, and suggests models of effective teaching techniques as needed; Promotes a caring, growth-oriented environment for faculty and students, one in which high expectations and high standards for student achievement are emphasized; Involves others effectively in the improvement of curriculum and instruction; Actively seeks out grants, donations, and supplementary funds to support the school program(s); Promotes collaboration and team building among faculty; Ensures school’s achievement of annual yearly progress by meeting the annual school performance growth targets. Executive Leadership Leads a continuous cycle of planning based on data, implementing plans through effective communication and visionary leadership, monitoring to ensure actions are getting the desired results, and changing approaches as necessary. Engages the school community in reviewing culture and climate data, including surveys and observable data, and solicits feedback about what needs to happen to ensure explicit goals are met and that the school community takes pride in their school. The school is the center of community activity. Ensures professional development is designed and linked to teacher observations, formative assessment results, and school-wide goals. Communicates high expectations to staff, students, and families, and supports students to achieve them. Effectively employs staffing practices (recruitment and selection, assignment, shared leadership, job-embedded professional development, observations with meaningful instructional feedback, evaluation) in order to continuously improve instruction and meet student learning goals. Productively uses data and research-based practices to work with staff to increase academically-focused family and community engagement; Communicates high expectations to staff, students, and families; students are supported to achieve them. Ensures that teachers utilize research-based, rigorous and effective instruction to meet the needs of all students and aligned with State Standards. Ensures that teachers have the foundational documents and instructional materials needed to teach to the rigorous college and career ready state standards. Develop and execute an actionable plan to better recruit, retain and develop highly effective teachers. Ensures the school-wide use of data focused on improving teaching and learning. Redesign time to better meet student and teacher learning needs and increase teacher collaboration focusing on improving teaching and learning. Strategic Communication and Planning Creates and engages teams in a 30-, 60-, and 90-day plan with quantifiable goals and accomplishes the goals with measurable results; Leads schools’ internal and external constituents in a strategic marketing campaign that creates a positive brand image for the school; Engages internal and external constituents in fund development planning designed to create a school endowment for unfunded extra support for innovative instructional programs, additional student support services, and industry quality materials and equipment to support high quality industry certification courses; Creates a public relations strategy that will cultivate reciprocal partnerships with targeted, high-level external businesses and industries in the Greater New Orleans community. Facilities Management Provides management and direction of facility use, logistical operations, and custodial and maintenance staff; Ensures the facility is maintained at a high level of cleanliness and repair; Collaborate with central office facilities team to evaluate services and participates in contract evaluation and RFP team. School Management Promotes the success of all students by ensuring management of the organization, operations, and resources for a safe and orderly learning environment. Maintains a safe, secure, clean, aesthetically pleasing physical school plant; Establishes school procedures and policies that promote effective school operations; Complies with federal, state, and local, laws, regulations and Orleans Parish School Board Policy; Establishes and enforces school discipline policies, where good student discipline is the norm; Manages fiscal resources responsibly, efficiently, and effectively, and monitors staff compliance with fiscal policies; Reviews for accuracy and compliance all bi-weekly and supplemental payroll records prior to releasing to payroll; Creates management systems for all funding sources, prepare financial reports, and oversee all financial matters as required by law and Board policy; Manages human resources responsibly by selecting and inducting new personnel appropriately, by assigning and evaluating all staff effectively, and by building a school staff to achieve the school’s mission; Monitors support services such as transportation, food, health, and extended care; Provides oversight and coordination for appropriate co-curricular and extra-curricular activities; Use shared decision-making effectively in the management of the school; Uses available technology effectively to manage school operations; Monitors and evaluates school operations and uses feedback appropriately to enhance effectiveness. School Improvement Works with the school community to review data from multiple sources to establish challenging standards, monitor progress, and foster the continuous growth of all students. Provides ongoing opportunities for staff to reflect on their roles and practices in light of student standards and school goals; Engages in professional development activities and makes opportunities available for others; Facilitates school-based research and uses these and other research findings to plan school improvement initiatives, implements the initiatives, and evaluates their impact to teaching and learning; Fosters the genuine continuous involvement and commitment of the school community in promoting the progress of all students toward attaining high standards; Enhances school effectiveness by appropriately integrating the processes of teacher’s selection/evaluation and professional development with school improvement. Professional Development Works collaboratively with the school faculty and staff to plan and implement professional development activities that promote both individual and organizational growth and lead to improved teaching and learning. Communicates a focused vision for both school and individual professional growth; Uses research and data from multiple sources to design and implement professional development activities; Provides opportunities for individual and collaborative professional development; Assesses the overall impact of professional development activities on the improvement of teaching and student learning. School-Community Relations Uses an understanding of the culture of the community to create and sustain mutually supportive school-community relations; Communicates effectively and gains support for goals within the school and the community; Communicates school’s goals and achievements to the community; Uses school-community resources to enhance the quality of school programs, including resources available through business, industry, and higher education; Recognizes and celebrates school successes publicly; Communicates effectively both interpersonally and through the media. Professional Ethics Demonstrates honesty, integrity, and fairness to guide the operation and management of the school functions in an ethical manner; Models ethical behavior at both the school and community level; Communicates to others’ expectations of behavior; Respects the rights and dignity of others; Provides accurate information without distortion or violating the rights of others; Develops a caring school environment in collaboration with the faculty and staff; Applies laws, policies, regulations, and procedures fairly and consistently; Minimizes bias in self and others and accepts responsibility for own decisions and actions; and Perform other related duties as required. Educational Background Master’s degree in education or similar area of study strongly preferred. Valid Louisiana teaching certificate with Louisiana with an Educational Leadership endorsement or certification as Principal listed on certificate required. Five years of successful teaching experience. Five years of previous experience in school administration required with additional experience in central office administration preferred. Experience in traditional public schools strongly preferred. Experience as a school turn-around leader is a plus. Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Documented evidence of moving a low performing school to a highly effective school as measured by State performance criteria. Documented evidence of proficient performance in school leadership experiences is required. Knowledge of Common Core Standards, Louisiana School Accountability Standards, and COMPASS is a minimal expectation. Possess strong leadership and supervisory skills to oversee and guide the operations of the school successfully. Ability to foster teamwork and collegiality. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Excellent interpersonal skills with the proven ability to professionally and effectively communicate with educators, parents, and community leaders. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. Extremely effective administration of multifaceted operations. Thorough understanding of applicable local, state, and federal educational laws, regulations, policies, and requirements. Thorough understanding of instructional methodology. Knowledge of best practices in education and educational administration. Ability to identify and solve problems. Creative thinking skills. Ability to create, understand, and implement budgets and budgeting practices. Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software. $100,000 - $120,000 a year Salary Offers Our salary offers reflect a commitment to equity and transparency. Each offer is determined by education, years of experience, and alignment with compensation across similar roles within the district. Performance Evaluation The employee will be evaluated based on the above position using either two methods: via COMPASS or a NOLA-PS evaluating instrument. If the employee holds an Educational Leadership certification, he/she will be evaluated via COMPASS to ensure renewal of certification.
