Meteorologist/Multiskilled Journalist
NewsWest 9 has a full-time opening for a Meteorologist/Multiskilled Journalist to join our team. As a meteorologist, you will anchor the weather for weekend shows and other newscasts. You will be responsible for preparing and delivering accurate weather reports on-air and online in a conversational manner. You will also be an integral part of the weather team in severe weather coverage. This includes tracking storms using the latest technology and/or reporting live from the field. You will also create original content for our NewsWest 9+ streaming platform. As an MSJ, you will create compelling content for all NewsWest 9 platforms, from TV to digital platforms to social media.
Responsibilities:
- Develop story ideas, write, shoot, and edit news stories for on-air, streaming on NewsWest 9+ and newswest9.com
- Write in an exciting, captivating, and authentic manner
- Enterprise original news and weather content for our streaming platform
- Deliver on-air news events in an engaging, compelling, and accurate manner
- Pitch work-ahead stories and coordinate with a team to develop a plan for impact
- Strong social media skills, including an active news hound presence on X, Facebook, and Instagram
- Organizational skills and the ability to work under constant time pressure deadlines
- Present the weather in our weekend newscasts and as needed on other shifts
- Provide accurate and compelling weather forecasts on multiple platforms
- Prepare and deliver severe weather updates, interrupting regular programming as necessary
- Update website and engage with viewers on social media platforms daily
- Work in the field, on special projects and other duties as assigned
- Make public appearances and attend community events
- Operate news gathering vehicle to and from various locations
Requirements:
- Degree in Meteorology and/or Broadcast Journalism with demonstrated weather experience or equivalent experience as a television weather on-air talent
- Understanding of the principles of professional journalism
- Experience in photojournalism, video editing and content management systems
- Strong social media skills
- Knowledge of ENPS, Edius and Axis graphics a plus
- Ability to calmly handle live, breaking news situations and changing events
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, early mornings and holidays
- Fill in for Meteorologists on various days and shifts to cover vacation and time off
- Provide forecast information to the station's website, social media and news ticker as required
