High School ELL Teacher (SY 2026-27)

Job Overview Hmong College Prep Academy (HCPA) is a Title I Charter School that serves students through a school‑wide plan focused on the needs of at‑risk learners. The high school ELL Teacher instructs English language learners and supports learning in the grade level(s) for which they are hired. The teacher creates a flexible classroom environment that fosters learning and personal growth, instructs students in all language domains (speaking, listening, writing, and reading), and helps make grade‑level and academic content comprehensible. Responsibilities Provide instruction in the core curriculum areas for which employed; use instructional resources and technologies. Support the Minnesota Graduation and Common Core Standards and implement district and school goals. Evaluate student performance, maintain required student records, and report to the principal as prescribed. Perform classroom management duties and enforce conduct rules, taking disciplinary action when necessary. Use differentiated instructional methods to ensure mastery of content. Use data (screening, diagnostics, progress monitoring, and daily work samples) to guide instruction and provide feedback. Maintain a welcoming, respectful, friendly, and academically challenging learning environment. Maintain accurate records (grades, assessments, lesson plans) via HCPA’s learning management systems (Schoology, Seesaw) and/or PowerSchool. Ensure all online class resources are current. Connect with families via phone, email, conferences, and school events. Foster a social environment that develops trust, respect, friendships, and self‑discovery. Participate in professional development meetings and learning communities, providing student work when requested. Implement new learning strategies in the classroom following professional development. Develop and refine learning based on self‑assessment and input from teacher leaders and the director of teaching and learning. Continuously seek opportunities to grow and learn as a professional. Supervise student activities, which may include bus duty, breakfast/lunch duty, or other related duties. Accountabilities Adhere to MN Teachers Code of Conduct. Support school goals and objectives consistent with HCPA’s vision, mission, and values. Participate in creating a culture of excellence, teamwork, and collaboration among staff, teachers, students, and families. Establish effective and cooperative relationships with students, parents, teachers, and staff. Respond promptly to parent, student, and staff needs. Maintain strict confidentiality regarding students and the educational setting. Engagement Activities Volunteer activities (three required): open houses, school dances, prom, concerts, etc. Staff may choose activities that fit their interests and student grade level. Required Activities Grade‑level parent meetings Fall and spring parent/teacher conferences HCPA graduation Required Qualifications Current MN teaching license in English as a Second Language for grades 6‑12. BA or MA in ESL Education or related field; equivalent experience may be considered. Strong classroom presentation and management skills. Knowledge of instructional technologies. Knowledge of research and trends in teaching and student learning. Ability to use computer and multimedia technology. Knowledge of core curriculum areas and preference for candidates trained in LETRS or with structured literacy experience. Knowledge of teaching strategies for diverse student needs and abilities. Knowledge of multicultural, gender, and disability‑fair curriculum concepts. Ability to adapt instructional routines, activities, and scaffolding to diverse student populations. Ability to implement classroom activities fostering problem‑solving and critical thinking. Ability to plan and implement lessons based on district and school objectives. Ability to evaluate student performance and present evaluations to promote achievement. Ability to pursue personal professional growth and development. Strong interpersonal skills working with students, parents, district staff, and community members. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Excellent organizational and time‑management skills; ability to multitask. Knowledge of school setting programs, functions, and procedures. Ability to remain calm in emergency and stressful situations. Ability to exercise initiative and sound judgment within established guidelines. Preferred Qualifications Experience with children of diverse ethnic backgrounds in an urban school setting. 3+ years of teaching experience. Experience with WIDA English Language Development standards. Experience administering the WIDA ACCESS test. Other Information Unofficial transcripts are accepted at hire; official transcripts must be submitted within 30 days. Formal credential evaluation is required for post‑secondary education completed outside the United States. Work Environment & Conditions Duties performed in a school/classroom environment; building is multi‑level with elevator and accessible. Extensive interaction with children of all ages. Possible exposure to loud and noisy locations. Use of standard equipment (computer, fax, telephone, copier). Fast‑paced environment. Frequent keyboarding, repetitive motion, rapid eye movements, and telephone use. Requires ability to sit for extended periods, push, reach, or bend. May require weekend, evening work, and some travel. Duties May Occasionally Be Performed Field trips away from school. Outdoor environments such as athletic fields or playgrounds. Varying weather conditions (hot or cold).
