Librarian/Media Specialist Sunflower County Consolidated School District, Indianola, Mississippi Starting Date: July 1, 2026 Qualifications Valid teacher certification At least two years of experience as a teacher Able to communicate effectively with students, teachers, parents, and community members Good physical condition with ability to lift 10 pounds State certification in library/media science Job Goal To provide all students with an enriched library environment containing a wide variety of materials that will invite intellectual growth and to aid all students in acquiring the skills needed to take full advantage of media center resources. Performance Responsibilities Duties consist of at least 75% of time spent on non-administrative activities. Management of Educational Resources Operate and supervise the media center assigned. Evaluate, select, and requisition new media center materials. Assist teachers in selection of books and instructional materials and make media center materials available to supplement instructional programs. Maintain a comprehensive and efficient cataloging system and instruct teachers and students on its use. Work with teachers to plan assignments that extend use of media center resources. Inform teachers and staff about new materials acquired by the media center. Arrange interlibrary loan of material of interest to teachers. Serve as consultant to principals and teachers regarding materials, equipment, and their educational use. Serve as consultant to curriculum committees. Collaborate with building principal and department heads to promote effective use of media center items. Arrange frequent book-related displays and exhibits to interest patrons. Conduct at least one annual in-service workshop on creation and design of audiovisual materials, plus other necessary programs. Expose students to computer literacy and educational software (e.g., Excel, PowerPoint). Student Performance and Departmental Efforts Promote appropriate conduct of students using media center facilities. Help students develop independent reference habits and skills for using reference materials. Present and discuss materials with a class on the invitation of the teacher. Provide counseling and reading guidance to students with special needs. Monitor media center attendance and keep attendance records. Assist students in locating reference and instructional materials. Read to small groups of elementary students and teach library literacy skills. Fiscal Management and Fixed Assets Purchase books and supplies as required by district standards. Maintain fixed assets inventory as required by the district. Maintain files of catalog cards, vertical file material, and publisher’s catalogs. Remove obsolete and worn materials from the media center collection. Prepare and administer the media center budget. Conduct annual inventory of media center materials and repair or discard missing items. Supervise clerical routines necessary for efficient operation. Shelve incoming materials. Maintain inventory of supplies and recommend items for acquisition. Establish procedures for processing material requests and equipment maintenance. Assume responsibility for inventory and maintenance of instructional materials and audiovisual equipment. Continuously evaluate materials and equipment to guide selective purchasing. Perform other tasks as requested by supervisors. Terms of Employment Salary and work year established by the SCCSD School Board.
