Public Works currently has two (2) vacancies for the position of Project Manager I (5502) within the Bureau of Project Management - Project Delivery Division – Streetscape Team.

Job Description

As a Project Manager I, under administrative direction, you will be responsible for overseeing the planning, coordination, and execution of assigned capital improvement projects within the city. Key responsibilities include managing project budgets, coordinating with cross-functional agency stakeholders, overseeing engineering design reviews, ensuring community outreach compliance, and tracking construction milestones from procurement through closeout.

Under Ramp Park Project:
The Under Ramp Park Project will transform the under-utilized, industrial space beneath the interstate freeway structures into an active, vibrant, and safe public park for the surrounding neighborhood. This neighborhood-wide community initiative focus area will deliver recreational amenities, multi-use plazas, public art installations, and fenced off-leash dog play areas. The scope includes extensive site grading, specialized safety lighting installation, utility connections, security fencing, and low-maintenance urban landscaping to activate the space and provide a high-quality public asset for residents and visitors.

Mission Street Safety Improvements Project:
The Mission Street Safety Improvements Project will construct permanent pedestrian, streetscape, and transit infrastructure along Mission Street between the Embarcadero and 3rd Street. Supporting the South Downtown Design + Activation Plan (SODA), this project aims to improve multimodal safety, transit reliability, and vehicular circulation. Key corridor upgrades include pedestrian bulb-outs, enhanced street lighting, bi-directional red transit lanes, traffic signal upgrades, overhead catenary system improvements, and landscaping

Important and Essential Duties:
Your duties as a Project Manager I may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Planning, organizing, and directing all phases of the project including but not limited to:
    • Assembling design teams.
    • Executing solicitations for professional services and construction contracts.
    • Selecting project delivery methods.
    • Managing the design phase, including design coordination meetings and facilitation of issue resolution in support of the project objectives.
    • Facilitating the regulatory approval process.
  • Responsibility for monitoring the project budget, funding, schedule, design, planning activities, and change orders.
  • Coordinating work of a multi-disciplinary technical staff across organizational boundaries.
  • Supervising and managing construction management professionals to ensure the product complies with the contract for construction, codes, and City and County of San Francisco (CCSF) Standards.
  • Communicating and working extensively with the public, private contractors, special interest groups, governmental funding and regulatory agencies, and CCSF departments. Serving as a primary contact for all parties involved in the project.
  • Conducting onsite visits to job and meeting locations.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Any combination of education, training, and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities may be qualifying. A typical way to obtain this would be:

1. Bachelor's Degree in architecture, engineering, or planning plus four (4) years of responsible architectural, engineering or construction management experience,

OR

2. Bachelor's Degree in another field plus six (6) years of responsible experience in a field directly related to the project,

OR

3. Eight (8) years of architectural, engineering, or construction management experience in a field directly related to the project,

OR

4. Valid California registration as a professional engineer or architect.
