JOB DESCRIPTION:

PRIMARY DUTY:

The Plumber responsibilities include assembling, installing and maintaining piping and piping systems, fixtures, and equipment for steam, hot water, heating and cooling, following recognized procedures and techniques of the plumbing trade.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Repairs or replaces plumbing fixtures such as sinks, toilets, showers, bathtubs, water heaters, electronic and manual flush valves and faucets, drinking fountains, or connects them to outlet and inlet pipes by making adjustments in pumps, regulators, and associated piping, threading, bending, or fusion welding pipe either by hand or by use of power equipment, screwing, bolting or fitting gaskets, couplings, traps and valves, and soldering, lead wiping, and/or acetylene cutting and welding connections to seal joints where necessary.

2. Completes assigned projects with quality workmanship by using hand or power tools (such as sewer auger or vacuum plunger, acetylene torch, soldering and welding tools, pipe threaders and cutters, gas leak detector, sewer camera, pipe locator, and appropriate chemicals) to install, alter, or rebuild high pressure steam, water, and gas lines, valves, traps, drains, basins, faucets, electronic flush valves and faucets, lavatories, sinks, hydrants, and other plumbing fixtures and equipment, cutting and joining pipes (both threaded and fusion welded).

3. Repairs and replaces pneumatic steam valves, gas valves, traps, and steam and condensate pipes.

4. Repairs and replaces domestic hot water heat pumps, chilled water pumps, sump pumps, and sewage pumps.

5. Inspects and repairs all sizes of backflow prevention devices.

6. Protects University property and equipment from damage during assigned work by removing furniture, wall fixtures, and equipment from work sites if possible or covering immovable items with protective cloths, covering floors with cloths or tarpaulins, and erecting scaffolding or support structures in a manner that prevents damage.

7. Reduces the likelihood for liability regarding the University's compliance with federal regulations by complying with policies, laws, and regulations governing environmental protection, safety, hazardous waste disposal, and the use of chemical substances and materials common to plumbing work.

8. Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:

Education: High school diploma

Certification/License: Valid driver's license; Must acquire backflow certification/Asbestos Worker/OSHA 10 within six months of employment

Experience: Five years of experience in commercial/residential plumbing, (Up to two years of education in applicable area will be credited toward experience based on an exchange rate of one to one)

WORKING CONDITIONS:

This position will work Monday through Friday for the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with a half-hour meal break. This position will occasionally work in confined spaces or at varied heights, as well as hot, cold, wet, and/or dirty conditions. This position may be required to work days, nights, weekends, and holidays as needed to support University events or emergencies. This position is considered essential staff. Essential staff provide services that relate directly to the health, safety, and welfare of the University, ensure continuity of key operations, and maintain and protect University properties. Should the University close for any reason, essential staff will report to work as usual.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

May assist in supervising student and/or temporary employees

EQUIPMENT/MATERIALS USED:

Hand tools, cable machines, sewer camera, miscellaneous plumbing equipment, ladders, bucket trucks, skid steer loader, fork truck, aerial lifts, torches, welder, brazing, soldering, and pipe threader

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Must be able to stand or walk for long periods of time during the regular work day; use arms and hands to reach for, handle, and manipulate objects; lift and carry materials weighing at least 50 pounds, climb up and down ladders, work at high heights, scaffolds, and other climbing devices; carry tools and equipment; work while in stooped, kneeling, crouched, and crawling positions
