C++ developer

Overview


We are seeking a senior-level C++ engineer to help modernize a mission-critical retail application that has been in production for more than 30 years.


This role is focused on understanding and transforming a large legacy system built on a proprietary file-based database platform. The ideal candidate has experience working with older database technologies, reverse engineering existing systems, and helping organizations migrate from legacy file-based databases to modern architectures.


This is a hands-on engineering role for someone who enjoys solving difficult modernization challenges and working with large, mature codebases.


Required Experience

• 10+ years of C++ development experience
• Experience supporting and enhancing large legacy applications
• Experience reverse engineering undocumented code and business logic
• Experience modernizing or migrating legacy database platforms
• Strong understanding of data structures, file formats, indexing, and storage engines
• Experience analyzing and converting legacy data models
• Ability to understand highly customized systems built over many years

Preferred Legacy Database Experience


Candidates do not need experience with a specific database, but should have worked with one of the following:

• VSAM
• ISAM / C-ISAM
• Btrieve
• Pervasive SQL
• FairCom c-tree
• RMS
• IMS
• Adabas
• IDMS
• Other proprietary, hierarchical, or file-based database systems

Target Candidate Profile


We are looking for engineers who have done things such as:

• Migrated applications from VSAM, ISAM, Btrieve, c-tree, or similar technologies
• Converted file-based databases into relational database structures
• Reverse engineered proprietary data formats and legacy applications
• Modernized large C++ codebases while maintaining business continuity
• Worked on retail, POS, inventory, or other transaction-intensive systems
• Led or contributed to enterprise modernization efforts involving legacy platforms
