Dispatcher / Logistics Coordinator

Location : Lake Charles, LA. On-site.

Employment Type : Full-time, temp-to-hire

Schedule : Monday to Friday, plus rotating Saturdays. Expect 50 to 55 hours per week with overtime pay.

Travel : None, this role works out of the company's yard.

Compensation : $28 to $32 / hour + Overtime + Full Benefits + 401(k) Match

Run the Board and Keep the Trucks Moving

Our client is an established scrap metal recycling company in Lake Charles with a busy yard and more than 500 containers across various customer sites. They are hiring a dispatcher who stays ahead of the day, keeps drivers on schedule, and looks for ways to save on every run. If you know trucks and like being the one who makes the day run smooth, this job is for you.

Position Summary

You will dispatch 5 to 7 company drivers plus contract haulers. Each driver runs 3 to 4 loads a day, dropping off, picking up, and swapping roll-off containers at industrial, commercial, and residential sites. You will plan routes, watch trucks on GPS, and fix problems before they cost money. You will also help onboard new drivers and keep DOT paperwork in order.

Essential Responsibilities

Dispatch & Routing

• Dispatch company and contract drivers every day and plan routes ahead of time.
• Watch trucks on GPS and follow up when a driver falls behind or goes off route.
• Schedule container drop-offs, pickups, and swaps.
• Adjust the plan when customer needs or conditions change.
• Use dispatch software (ScrapDragon) to assign runs and track completed work.

Drivers & Contractors

• Keep drivers accountable for staying on time, working safe, and treating customers right.
• Find and schedule reliable contract drivers at a fair price.
• Get the most out of company drivers so the company spends less on outside haulers.
• Keep overtime under control while getting the work done.

DOT, Onboarding & Records

• Help onboard new drivers, including clinic visits, drug screens, and paperwork.
• Keep driver files, licenses, insurance, and DOT records current.
• Keep accurate dispatch and run records.
• Trucks & Equipment
• Use your truck knowledge to sort out driver-reported problems and decide next steps.
• Work with the shop when a truck or trailer is down.

Supervision & Professional Development

• Directs the daily work of company drivers and contract haulers.
• Works closely with the shop, the scale house, and the office.
• Real ownership of the board, with room to improve how dispatch runs.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• 4 to 5 years of truck dispatch, logistics, or fleet experience preferred.
• Experience with dispatch software and GPS tracking. ScrapDragon is a plus.
• Know your way around trucks, trailers, and DOT rules.
• Comfortable managing drivers and holding them to a standard.
• Scrap or recycling experience is a plus but not required.
