Executive Director - Senior Living

We’re looking for an Executive Director (ED) to lead The Terraces at Los Altos (TLA), a vibrant Life Plan Community known for its beautiful campus, engaged and accomplished residents, and culture of connection, well-being, and lifelong purpose. What You’ll Do

As Executive Director, you’ll be at the heart of TLA—overseeing daily operations, setting the tone for resident and team member experiences, and ensuring we deliver the highest level of service while meeting financial and operational goals. Typical responsibilities include:

  • Leads planning process to develop goals for quality care, team member retention and financial performance;
  • Manages the day-to-day operations of the community;
  • Directs the hiring and training of personnel;
  • Prepares annual budgets for approval by Senior Regional Management;
  • Directs and guides the activities of clinical, administrative and service departments;
  • Implements control systems to ensure accountability of all departments;
  • Represents community at community meetings and promotes programs through various news media;
  • Monitors performance for achievement of goals and for improvement, and takes corrective action when necessary;
  • Responsible for census development/marketing;
  • Ensures all team members receive orientation and ongoing training to meet the quality goals of the organization;
  • Functions as Compliance Liaison and ensures that Compliance Program and Corporate Compliance Agreement (CCA) requirements are met in the facility, including the following: Provides leadership and support related to compliance activities monitors and ensures execution of the Compliance Program and CCA requirements develops and distributes written compliance-related materials ensures the provision and documentation of appropriate training ensures the appropriate distribution of internal and external audit reports and the monitoring of corrective action related to such reports or other identified compliance-related issues ensures proper reporting and responses to compliance-related issues monitors facilities staff in the execution of their compliance-related functions supervises staff at each operational level who assist the Compliance Liaison in fulfilling compliance functions and certifies annually that all plans of correction related to identified problems in facilities or Kindred operations for which they are responsible, have been implemented and that all Compliance Program concerns have been reported.
  • The Executive Director is the campus risk manager. He or she works with the corporate risk manager and corporate risk management committee to develop and manage a campus risk management program to identify, assess, and mitigate actual and potential losses and exposures across all levels of care.

Supervisory Effectiveness

  • Provides assistance in the general administration, coordination and operations of the departments of the Community; works with staff, residents and the local Board to institute company mission Policies and Procedures;
  • Supervises department heads and clerical staff including instructing, assigning and reviewing work, planning, maintaining standards, coordinating activities, allocating personnel, acting on employee problems, selecting new employees, and recommending/approving transfers/promotions, discipline, termination, and salary increases; promotes staff development and motivation; provides instruction and guidance, and performs employee evaluations for assigned department heads; directs supervisor meetings;

Service Quality

  • Coordinates the operations and delivery of services by the departments of the Community; prepares, plans and executes the policies for the services offered;
  • Insures programs to enhance welfare of residents; communicates with the Resident Council; assists in resident assessment and care planning; counsels and responds to requests and/or complaints from residents; advises and receives information from families;
  • Monitors the community environment to provide residents quality services, medical/nursing care, dignity and comfort in the least restrictive environment;
  • Promotes the health and welfare of the residents; assists in development of programs and coordination of services; assists resident’s/family members with financial questions, including endowments and trusts and related problems when necessary, in partnership with company mission;
  • Complies with company mission standards in preparing for and responding to annual State Surveys resulting in no deficiencies for sub-standard care;
  • Promotes and protects the rights of each resident;
  • Actively participates in Resident Review, Safety Committee and other sub committees as assigned;

Operational and Financial Effectiveness

  • Provides leadership in all aspects of management of the Continuing Care Retirement Community, including final supervision of all Community department heads;
  • Assists in monitoring/managing the financial condition of the Community; estimates present and future financial needs; reviews and analyzes the financial position and related matters of the Community; prepares, administers and monitors the company mission approved operational budget and capital budget;
  • Approves all Community invoices;
  • Oversees the maintenance of records including resident status reports, Retirement Community Statistics, Daily Census, Meal Comment Cards, invoices, budgets, etc.;
  • Directs local fundraising and endowment development in partnership with company mission;
  • Assures that buildings and grounds are properly maintained;
  • Assists in devising or directs plans for disaster and emergency response;
  • Authorizes purchases of supplies and equipment;
  • Assists in development of the strategic plan and oversees development, and implementation of various Community systems and functions;
  • Oversees and coordinates marketing efforts with Seniority, Inc.; and is responsible for the Community admissions program; oversees and interviews prospective residents;
  • Promotes favorable public relations, open communications and goodwill with residents, family members and volunteers;
  • Reviews, prepares and refers to a variety of reports, memos, correspondence, logs, manuals and handbooks;
  • Plans for makes presentations at and/or attends various resident, staff and Board functions;
  • May coordinate computer functions, including hardware specification, purchasing, installation, training, troubleshooting, etc., in partnership with the company mission Information Technologies Department;
  • Participates in the management of projects including planning, bidding, coordinating of contracted services and monitoring of budgets; assists in planning future development, expansion and renovation, in partnership with the company mission Operations Assistant Vice President of Facilities and the CapEx Committee;
  • At smaller retirement communities, may perform functions of Director of Activities, Director of Resident Services, and Director of House and Grounds;
  • Promotes the mission of the local Community and company mission in surrounding communities;
  • Performs other related essential duties as assigned;

Professional Development

  • Participates in Corporate Operations Administrative Councils, Operations Community Resource Team and other company mission committees’/task forces as assigned;
  • Remains current on legislation and regulations that may impact Community operations and ensures regulatory compliance; directs all records/reports required by licensing agencies; maintains effective working relationships with representatives of State and local agencies, industry peers, and others involved in government
  • Attends and participates in local, state and national association meetings; maintains current education related to trends, new practices or designs for caring for residents.

Supervision/Leadership

  • Lead staff to achieve community, function and company performance goals.
  • Ensure quality recruiting, hiring, development and retention practices consistent with company procedures and standards.
  • Assign, review, plan and coordinate the work of other team members.
  • Delegate and oversee results of delegated work to staff.
  • Recommend and approve the discipline, dismissal, transfer or promotion of team members.
  • Assess the work of team members and write performance appraisals.
  • Administer pay, rewards and recognition within company guidelines that support individual and team performance toward achieving shared goals.
  • Analyze problems that arise in the areas under supervision and implement solutions.
  • Effectively communicate in all written and verbal forms of communication.
  • Create an environment for staff that honors, respects and values their opinions and suggestions; demonstrate fair treatment and ethical business practices; support staff development and reward achievement.
  • Provide leadership and management of staff to support the achievement of community and corporate performance goals. Observe and effectively manage the mood of the team.
  • Communicate performance standards to staff; observe, measure and evaluate performance to ensure standards are achieved; conduct regular performance observation, assessment and discussion with staff.
  • Communicate information that supports team and company performance, and communicate reasons for decisions.

  • At least 5 years of senior-level experience in senior living administration or related field.
  • Current NHA Certification (required for the Skilled Nursing department).
  • Current RCFE Certification—ability to act as licensed Administrator for Residential Living, Assisted Living, and Memory Care.
  • A bachelor’s degree in a related field (business, social work, gerontology, public administration, etc.); a master’s degree is strongly desirable.
