Registered Nurse (RN) II - Outpatient OR

This full time position works Monday-Friday from 6:30am-3:00pm in Outpatient Surgery. At Houston Methodist, the Registered Nurse (RN) II position is a licensed staff nurse, an experienced clinician, functioning at the Competent to Proficient stage of Benner's model of clinical practice. The RN II provides professional nursing care to a diverse patient population, conducts assessments, assists with exams and treatment, patient education, and maintains medical records. This role delivers direct patient care, often involving complex patients, and communicates with physicians and the interprofessional team to coordinate compassionate, efficient, quality care and achieve desired treatment outcomes. The RN II demonstrates clinical competence using technology, administering medications, performing procedures, and managing emergencies. The role may serve as charge nurse or preceptor, and contribute to unit, shared governance, or hospital‑wide initiatives. FLSA Status Non-exempt Qualifications Graduate of an education program approved by the credentialing body for required credentials. Twelve months registered nurse experience in a healthcare environment. Licenses and Certifications Required RN – Registered Nurse – Texas State Licensure – Texas Board of Nursing PSV Compact Licensure; must obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days if establishing Texas residency. BLS – Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA) – American Heart Association. Preferred Magnet – ANCC Recognized Certification. ACLS – Advanced Cardiac Life Support or Instructor (AHA). Skills and Abilities Demonstrate necessary skills and competencies through ongoing assessments and evaluations. Proficient in speaking, reading, and writing English for essential functions of the job. Effective communication with patients, physicians, families, and co‑workers consistent with customer service focus. Strong assessment, organizational, and problem‑solving skills; prioritizes multiple tasks. Ability to function independently and exercise judgment with physicians and the interprofessional team. Use critical thinking and clinical judgment to work autonomously as defined by the Nurse Practice Act. Proficient time management. Maintain professional contributions as defined by the Clinical Career Path program guide. Working knowledge of Microsoft products including Outlook. Essential Functions People Essential Functions Uses therapeutic communication to establish relationships with patients, families, and the care team. Supports teamwork by monitoring unit acuity, offering assistance, and responding positively to requests. Provides staff education, mentors staff and students, and participates in preceptorship. Promotes a culture of accountability toward improving department score for turnover, retention, and employee engagement on the unit-based scorecard. Service Essential Functions Follows patient and family‑centered care standards; conducts assessments, assists with exams, and maintains records. Develops, updates, and communicates plan of care, including discharge planning, in partnership with the patient, family, and team. Provides patient teaching tailored to learning needs, evaluates comprehension, and adapts methods accordingly. Contributes to improvement of patient satisfaction score on the unit-based scorecard. Quality/Safety Essential Functions Follows nursing process standards as outlined in the Houston Methodist Professional Nursing Practice document. Adheres to regulatory requirements and professional practice standards; identifies practice improvements with evidence‑based research to achieve core measures and safety outcomes. Coordinates care for complex patients with the team, documenting accurately; uses evidence‑based analytical approach. Improves unit-based quality and safety scores through peer‑to‑peer accountability, reporting near misses, and collaborating with the team. Finance Essential Functions Self‑motivated to manage time, document care timely, and minimize overtime; prioritizes daily tasks. Provides input on unit resource utilization and capital and operational budget needs. Helps meet department financial targets by decreasing length of stay and optimizing efficiency. Growth/Innovation Essential Functions Identifies and presents areas for innovation, efficiency, and improvement using evidence‑based practice literature. Champions new care pathways or service line implementation to improve service; identifies trends, supports initiatives, and presents options to shared governance and leadership.
