Job Title: Welder / Structural Plate Fitter

Job Description

This role focuses on structural plate fitting and flux core welding to support the fabrication of large industrial furnaces. You will work primarily with plate, performing hand fitting and welding on steel components, reading and interpreting blueprints, and contributing to a busy, production-focused shop. The position suits someone with solid core welding and fitting skills who wants to learn, grow, and consistently show up ready to work.

Responsibilities

• Perform flux core welding on plate and occasional pipe, ensuring high-quality welds that meet project specifications.
• Fit and assemble structural steel plate components by hand (non-jig), working with plate thicknesses up to 3/4 inch.
• Read and interpret blueprints to fit steel parts accurately and tack weld components in the correct position.
• Fabricate parts and assemblies according to drawings and weld symbols, including layout, cutting, fitting, and welding tasks.
• Operate hand tools, including hand saws and torches, to cut and prepare materials for welding and fitting.
• Perform MIG welding as required for production and fabrication tasks.
• Use overhead cranes safely to move and position steel components and assemblies.

Essential Skills

• 2–3 years of flux core welding experience on pipe or plate.
• 2–3 years of fitting experience working with structural plate or similar steel fabrication.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, including weld symbols, and apply them accurately in fitting and welding tasks.
• Ability to tack weld components in place prior to final welding.
• Strong attendance record, supported by references that confirm reliable and consistent work habits.
• Experience with structural plate fitting and fabrication work.
• Capability to perform MIG welding in a production or fabrication environment.
• Comfort working with hand tools, saws, torches, and overhead cranes in an industrial shop.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• MIG welding certification is preferred but not required if you demonstrate strong core skills and potential.
• Experience with TIG welding and stainless steel is beneficial but not mandatory.
• Prior experience working as a fitter in a job shop or similar industrial environment.
• Familiarity with converting blueprints from metric to imperial measurements.
• Ability to pass a weld test and a blueprint/weld symbol assessment during the interview process.

Work Environment

You will work in a very industrial, older facility focused on fabricating large industrial furnaces, some up to approximately 105 feet long and 200 feet high. The shop is not climate controlled, so it can be very cold in winter and hot in summer, similar to many traditional job shop environments. The role involves regular use of welding equipment, hand saws, torches, and overhead cranes in a heavy fabrication setting. The standard schedule runs Monday through Thursday from 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The dress code requires steel-toe footwear, jeans, and a t-shirt or sweatshirt appropriate for an industrial shop. This setting best fits individuals who are comfortable in a rugged, hands-on environment and accustomed to working in non-climate-controlled facilities.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Coraopolis, PA.

The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $24.00/hr.

This is a fully onsite position in Coraopolis,PA.
