Direct Support Professional

Role Overview:DSP must be able to assist people with disabilities in identifying personal interests, which lead to meaningful activities of choice in the community.DSPs must understand how to navigate the community and how individuals with disabilities add value to their community.DSPs must identify support needed that will assist the person with a disability in becoming as independent as possible.Essential Functions:Promoting a therapeutic environment in the homes, workplace and/or JDT sites.Keeping the space clean, neat and clutter free.Discard trash, used materials, expired food etc.Teach the individual how to recycle and where to locate the recycle bin onsiteMust bring to attention of management broken or tattered furniture/ electronicsMust clean and sanitize homes, workplaces and/or JDT sites throughout the workdayPlay calm background music on radios throughout the day or soothing sleep music for individuals at nightWhenever possible, turning on oil diffusers with calming scentsKnowledge of person’s health, vocational, employment, learning, communication needsStay up to date on Phase II training for everyone supportedSupporting the individual on their needs to their desired level of assistanceThis might include assistance with toileting, showering, cooking, cleaning, daily living activities etc.Must attend all mandatory trainings for each individual supported throughout the year, failure to comply will result in being pulled off shift until training is completedMust be able to demonstrate competency on each individual through exams, periodic and random interviews by Quality Assurance Team, Management Team, or Service Coordinators.Failure to demonstrate competency will require additional supplemental retraining and a mandatory performance improvement planOngoing training and professional development to improve skillsMust attend all mandatory staff meetings/ trainings and weekly clinical meetingsBe punctual to meetings/trainings, well dressed and always represent GRS with your bestHave a positive and team-player attitude at meetings/ trainingsBe engaged and interactive with the trainers and co-workersAdvocacy- (community inclusiveness)Advocate for the individuals at all times in all settingsBe kind, courteous, have compassion and understandingEffective communication with person supported and their circle of supportEffective communication with management through daily report logs and bring to attention of management all potential safety and health concernsEffective communication with various GRS departments and understand to whom and where to voice your concerns or needs.When emailing be sure to include your first and last name, your working state, use your GRS provided email (unless you are email IT regarding email issues) and CC: your direct supervisor (unless it is an email which you wish to remain private).Payroll: Pay related issues, updating ACH bank accounts, tax filing status updates, paycheck stubs, issues with Paychex etc. View email address on click.appcast.io Resources: HR related issues or concerns, grievance with the organization, management or co-workers, updating personnel information etc. View email address on click.appcast.io: Issues with Clock Shark, Therap, MS Teams, work email account, internet connectivity at various GRS sites etc. View email address on click.appcast.io of special accommodations and adaptive equipment, when neededReport any issues/ malfunctions with adaptive equipment immediatelyAlways use adaptive equipment safely and ask for re-training whenever neededTeach appropriate social interaction behaviors and interpersonal skills (Soft Skills)/BSP data record keepingModel good behavior in the workplace through positive attitude, cleanliness, healthy habits and kindnessStay up to date on all CPR training, BSP training (if applicable), CPO training (if applicable)Try to the best of your ability to assist the individual to understand and prehend lessons at day programs/ JDT, letters in the mail, their job schedule, agreements, doctors’ orders, social security, interpret social interactions, leases, etc.Seek assistance from a manager or senior DSP if the individual needs additional assistance to navigate the complexities of completing forms or understanding documentsCommunity navigating, connections, partnerships and travel trainingHelp individuals navigate the community through public transportation, scheduling transportation, ordering bus passes, mapping routesHelp individuals navigate their community by understanding surrounding amenities. This might include checking their mailbox, finding the nearest grocery store/ rec center, locating their nearest favorite restaurant, help find and navigate to doctors, dentists, schools etc.Daily progress note, BSP (if applicable) and goal documentation on the activities completed or refused throughout the day.Must document daily a note in Therap, MS Teams or on paper in binders, when applicable.Daily note must be completed by end of shift and must match clocked in time in Clock Shark/ Paychex. Both must be completed to receive pay for the day worked.Follow the posted schedule/ calendar for each location, home and site.This might include a daily calendar of activities and individual goals or a chore chart for your specific shiftAssist your direct supervisor and the individual with developing schedule/ calendar of activities and help the individual advocate for their likes/ dislikesDocument all activities completed and if not completed, document whyFailure to comply with posted schedule/ calendar will result in a mandatory performance improvement planAssist with monitoring funds for activities, outings, groceries etc.If you are given funds or access to petty cash, you must document each time funds are spent, indicate the purpose, you must initial, and the individual must initial on the funds form.Receipts from each transaction must photographed and emailed to View email address on click.appcast.io with as must detail about the transaction as possible and original must be place in designed spot at each site by end of dayGRS has a zero-tolerance policy for misuse or theft of funds.
