Senior Director, Bacterial Vaccine Discovery

AstraZeneca seeks a Senior Director to lead bacterial vaccine discovery within its Early Infectious Disease team in Gaithersburg, Maryland. This role involves directing a multidisciplinary scientific team to develop novel vaccine candidates using carbohydrate conjugate, mRNA, and protein-based platforms, while managing partnerships and advancing the pipeline.
Responsibilities
- Lead team to discover and characterize bacterial vaccine antigens with supporting research packages
- Serve as subject matter expert presenting strategy and data to governance and senior leadership
- Present research progress and findings at scientific conferences and external forums
- Partner with translational sciences to develop and transfer assays for clinical trial characterization
- Evaluate external science and partnering opportunities to expand pipeline in collaboration with Business Development
Requirements
- PhD in microbiology, immunology, molecular biology, biochemistry, or related discipline
- 12+ years of industry experience in vaccine or infectious disease research
- Proven leadership managing teams of PhD and non-PhD level scientists
- Strong background in bacterial vaccine research and bacterial pathogenesis
- Experience characterizing immune responses and protective efficacy in animal models
- Familiarity with functional immunological assays (opsonophagocytic killing, serum bactericidal)
- Budget development and management experience for research programs and partnerships
