Fire Chief

Fire Chief Position Key responsibilities include directing fire and EMS operations, leading recruitment and retention efforts tailored for a combination department, overseeing budgeting and capital planning, fostering a unified "one-department" culture. The Fire Chief also works closely with the City Council and City Administrator, serves as the primary departmental spokesperson, and acts as the city’s Emergency Manager, Fire Marshal, and Safety Coordinator. Leadership and Skills Strong communication, leadership, strategic planning, and fiscal management skills are essential for success in this role. The ideal candidate will be a collaborative, forward‑thinking leader with demonstrated success managing complex fire service operations, developing high‑performing teams, and building consensus among regional jurisdictions and community stakeholders. Qualifications Minimum qualifications include a bachelor’s degree in Fire Science, Public Administration, Emergency Management, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, certifications, and experience. Candidates must possess ten years of progressively responsible experience in fire service, EMS, or public safety administration, or a closely related field, including five years in a command‑level leadership role, as well as a valid driver’s license. Minnesota Firefighter II, Fire Officer II, current EMT, and Minnesota Certified Emergency Manager certifications are required, though the City will allow the ideal candidate up to two years from the date of hire to attain these certifications.
