Business & Operations Manager Volunteer (Unpaid Role)

Commitment: 10-15 hours per week | Minimum 6 month commitment

Position Summary

The Business & Operations Manager is responsible for overseeing organizational operations, improving internal processes, and supporting strategic decision-making across departments. This role plays a critical part in ensuring efficiency, scalability, and alignment with A Free Bird’s mission and growth objectives.

This position is ideal for a detail-oriented and strategic thinker who can manage operations, optimize workflows, and support leadership through data-driven insights.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and implement operational strategies to improve efficiency and organizational performance
• Support budget planning, tracking, and resource allocation across departments
• Identify process gaps and lead process improvement initiatives to streamline workflows
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams (HR, Marketing, Programs, IT) to ensure smooth operations
• Establish and maintain operational systems, documentation, and best practices
• Analyze organizational data to support data-driven decision-making and strategic planning
• Track key performance indicators (KPIs) and prepare reports for leadership
• Assist in scaling operations and supporting new initiatives
• Ensure alignment between operational activities and organizational goals
• Support leadership with administrative and operational tasks as needed

Qualifications & Competencies

• 2–4+ years of experience in operations, business management, administration, or a related field as a manager
• Experience with budget development, financial tracking, or resource planning
• Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data and provide actionable insights
• Proven experience in process improvement and operational strategy
• Excellent organizational and time management skills
• Strong written and verbal communication abilities
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a remote environment
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Workspace (especially Excel/Sheets)

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in a nonprofit or startup environment
• Familiarity with data visualization or reporting tools
• Experience working across multiple departments or managing cross-functional projects

Commitment Expectations:

To help our teams collaborate effectively, all volunteers are expected to:

• Commit at least 6 months
• Contribute approximately 5-10 hours per week
• Attend our 30-minute virtual team meetings every Tuesday and Thursday
• Communicate proactively and work collaboratively with fellow volunteers
