Advanced Practice Provider

An exempt position with clinical duties. This person will function as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner in the department of surgery. This involves facilitating the care of surgical patients, responding to new consultations, and acting as the liaison between surgeon, patient, and clinical team. Responsibilities Understand and adhere to the WPH Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors Conduct physical exams, assess health status, order and interpret tests, prescribe medications, and treat illnesses Consult with physicians as needed and refer to physicians for more complicated medical cases or cases that are not routine part of a PA’s scope of practice Round on surgical inpatients and facilitate the appropriate care Assist in surgical procedures (preferred) Write notes and consultations on patients seen Attend multi-disciplinary rounds and team discharge rounds Consult on surgical patients both on the floor and ER Consult appropriate specialties as seen fit Monitor therapies and provide continuity of care Triage patient calls and evaluate patient problems and concerns; respond to emergencies including use of CPR Counsel patients/families on health care matters Document patient information and care in the medical record confidentially and maintain departmental statistical database for research and quality purposes Familiar with anatomy, pharmacology, pathophysiology, clinical medicine and physical diagnosis Perform all other related duties as assigned Act in a professional capacity and serve as a professional role model Demonstrate and encourage teamwork Show adaptability, flexibility, excellent written and verbal communication skills, stress tolerance, strong organizational skills Demonstrate skill in gathering and analyzing physiological, socioeconomic, and emotional patient data; evaluate patient problems in person or via phone and provide appropriate advice, intervention, or referral Make responsible decisions within the scope of PA practice Collaborate effectively with physicians and other medical disciplines Educate patients, families, and staff in a user-friendly manner Demonstrate hand-eye coordination, full range of motion, and manual dexterity Perform standing, sitting, walking, bending, stooping, twisting, and lifting as required May be exposed to hazardous chemicals; safety data sheet information available via hospital intranet and at the switchboard High level of responsibility and heavy workload may generate stress Qualifications Master’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited school (highly recommended) Current NYS license to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse Current NYS certification as a Nurse Practitioner (Adult or Geriatric) Maintains a current collaborative practice agreement Current National Certification (Nurse Practitioner) Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) (highly recommended) Proficiency in all procedures, techniques and skills approved in the delineation of privileges Current New York State Licensed Physician Assistant Current National Certification (PA) Current White Plains Hospital Physician Assistant DOP Master’s degree from an accredited school (highly recommended) Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) (highly recommended) Essential Sensory Requirements Ability to communicate verbally with patients, relatives, attending physicians, nurses and other hospital personnel Ability to give clear and decisive instructions Ability to maintain legible and thorough documentation of patient care Acute visual, auditory, tactile and olfactory senses May be exposed to hazardous chemicals; safety data sheet information available via hospital intranet and at the switchboard Primary Population Served Patients with exceptional communication needs Infants (29 days – less than 1 year) Patients with developmental delays Pediatric (1 – 12 years) Patients at end of life Adolescent (13 – 17 years) Patients under isolation precautions Patients with cultural needs Geriatric (> 65 years) Bariatric patients with weight‑related comorbidities The responsibilities and tasks outlined in this job description are not exhaustive and may change as determined by the needs of White Plains Hospital.
