Job Title
Performs responsible protective service work in providing emergency medical services to critically ill and injured patients under emergency conditions; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Emergency Medical Services Battalion Chief, Paramedic Captain or Paramedic.

Possession and maintenance of current certificates issued by the State of North Carolina for Emergency Medical Technician. Must obtain North Carolina EMT-Paramedic certification within 24 months of employment. This position works 12-hour rotating shifts and will be required to attend all continuing education classes required by Onslow County-Camp Lejeune EMS System. Qualified candidates will be asked to participate in a skills assessment and an interview for this position.
Position Responsibilities
Responding to emergency calls, providing emergency medical services and transportation; preparing and maintaining detailed records.
- Responds to E911 calls involving medical trauma, or behavioral emergencies which might require advanced life support; provides emergency medical care in accordance with established guidelines and written verbal instructions from physicians.
- Determines extent of illness or injury and establishes priorities for required care.
- Transmits vital patient information and telemetry data to receiving medical care facility.
- Observes patient in route and administers additional care as needed.
- Inspects advanced life support and telemetry equipment daily and ensures proper maintenance and operating conditions and inventories supplies.
- Interacts with assisting law enforcement and fire and rescue agencies and the public.
- Will be required to operate a County/emergency vehicle in the course of employment.
- Performs assigned functions as a Disaster Ready Team (DRT) member, if appointed or volunteer.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Thorough knowledge of emergency medical care techniques and procedures; thorough knowledge of advanced life support methods, procedures and equipment; thorough knowledge of medical terminology; thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, practices, techniques and equipment required for emergency medical treatment; thorough knowledge of the street system and physical lay-out of the County; ability to perform duties in emergency situations and to evaluate and differentially diagnose patient's conditions and communicate clearly with professional medical personnel; ability to perform general emergency medical treatment and specialized cardiac treatment; ability to respond quickly and calmly in emergency and stressful situations; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain cooperative relations with physicians, fellow employees and the public; and ability to prepare reports.
Physical Requirements: This work requires the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions and occasionally requires climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and tasting or smelling; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm's length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock, working with explosives, exposure to vibration, wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic). To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. Education, Experience, and Special Requirements
Possession of a high school diploma or GED is a requirement for this position. Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina. Possession and maintenance of current certificates issued by the State of North Carolina for Emergency Medical Technician. Current enrolment or acceptance into a Paramedic program is required. Please be sure to upload documentation of acceptance or enrolment in a Paramedic program to be considered for this position. Must obtain North Carolina EMT-Paramedic certification within 24 months of employment. Compensation will be determined based on qualifications, internal equity, budget, and market considerations.
