Equipment Operator IIThe City of Asheville is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Equipment Operator II in the Public Works department. The Public Works department is responsible for maintaining and improving city infrastructure, including roads, sidewalks, and storm drainage systems.The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.Operates various equipment and vehicles to complete tasks related to the maintenance, repair, and construction of City roadways, rights-of-way, sidewalks, storm drainage systems, and other infrastructure projects.Drives a dump truck to haul materials to and from work sites.Operates skid steer, backhoe-mounted loader, and loaders of similar size to load and/or move gravel, dirt, sand, and other materials for smaller projects and loads, and utilizes a skid steer to clear land or debris.Fuels and performs routine maintenance of equipment in the field.Drives snow plow truck with spreader to assist in snow and ice removal during winter weather events.Performs manual labor in support of construction, maintenance, and repair projects.Performs other duties in support of City operations.Follows established safety procedures.Communicates with supervisor, other City employees, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review the status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.Processes a variety of documentation associated with department/division operations, within the designated timeframes and per established procedures.Additional Functions: Performs other related duties as required.High school diploma or GED required, with at least one year of construction experience preferred; supplemented by one year of experience in heavy equipment operation; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Specific License or Certification Required: Must possess and maintain a valid Class B Commercial driver's license (CDL), including appropriate endorsement(s). Or possess the ability to obtain a Class B CDL within 90 days of hire. Must possess and maintain Flagger and Work Zone and Safety certification, or the ability to obtain within 180 days of hire.Specific Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities: Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in the performance of the essential functions and learn, comprehend, and apply all City or departmental policies, practices, and procedures necessary to function effectively in the position.Performance Aptitudes:Data Utilization: Requires the ability to determine, calculate, tabulate, or summarize data/information, following a prescribed plan requiring the exercise of some judgment. Includes performing subsequent actions in relation to these computational operations.Human Interaction: Requires the ability to exchange information for the purpose of clarifying details within well-established policies, procedures, and standards.Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to operate, maneuver, and/or control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials requiring complex and/or rapid adjustments.Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference and descriptive data and information.Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. May include counting, recording of counts, and basic measuring.Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form.
