About the Position:
-We are seeking an experienced attorney to serve as in-house legal counsel and provide leadership on client rights, labor and employment law, regulatory compliance, and general legal matters. This role partners closely with executive leadership, program staff, and external stakeholders to ensure organizational compliance while supporting a mission-driven environment focused on serving individuals with developmental disabilities.
Key Responsibilities
Client Rights & Advocacy
-Oversee and support client rights protections in accordance with applicable state and federal laws.
-Investigate alleged rights violations and recommend corrective actions when appropriate.
-Serve as a liaison with regulatory agencies and advocacy organizations.
-Develop and maintain policies, procedures, and staff training related to client rights and consumer advocacy.
-Monitor, analyze, and report on complaint trends and hearing outcomes.
Labor & Employment Law
-Provide legal guidance on employment law matters, including employee relations, workplace compliance, investigations, disciplinary actions, and terminations.
-Advise leadership and Human Resources on labor relations and collective bargaining matters.
-Assist with grievance management and employment-related disputes.
-Draft, review, and negotiate employment-related agreements, policies, and memorandums.
-Coordinate representation in administrative and regulatory proceedings when needed.
General Legal & Compliance
-Review contracts, vendor agreements, and other legal documents.
-Monitor legal and regulatory developments and advise leadership regarding compliance requirements.
-Coordinate with outside counsel on specialized legal matters.
-Provide guidance regarding HIPAA compliance and privacy-related issues.
-Oversee public records request processes and ensure compliance with applicable laws.
-Assist in the development and implementation of organizational policies and procedures.
Qualifications
Education & Licensing
-Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
-Active membership in good standing with the California State Bar.
Experience
-Minimum of five (5) years of legal practice experience.
-At least two (2) years of experience in one or more of the following areas:
-Disability rights
-Public agency law
-Labor and employment law
-Nonprofit organizational law
-Experience advising executive leadership on legal and compliance matters.
-Experience with California administrative proceedings and regulatory agencies preferred.
Knowledge & Skills
-Familiarity with California labor and employment law.
-Knowledge of disability services, client rights, or public agency operations preferred.
-Strong analytical, negotiation, research, and legal writing skills.
-Ability to communicate complex legal concepts to a variety of audiences.
-Excellent organizational and project management abilities.
-Experience reviewing contracts and managing compliance-related matters.
-Familiarity with HIPAA and privacy regulations preferred.
-Bilingual English/Spanish preferred but not required.
Compensation & Benefits
-Annual salary: $144,880 - $188,340
