Director, Data Strategy

The Director of Data Strategy is responsible for driving Putnam’s Enterprise Data and Analytics strategy and execution for all data management activities within Digital Technology. Data Strategy defines how the Putnam Platform implements enterprise data, handles reference databases, and exposes APIs' access to subsequent technologies, applications, and end users for their consumption. This position strives to ensure that the organization is functioning to enable sustainable business growth and profitability by capturing efficiencies through improved data access and eliminating duplicate data and multiple overlapping subject area databases that exist today. This role will combine data strategy and execution under one leader. The Director, Data Strategy is in charge of the development of the Data and Analytics overall strategy and delivery on the enterprise data management roadmap by working closely with business partners across Retail, Institutional, Investments, and Operations. This role ensures that Data and Analytics goals are aligned with the business’s mission, strategy, and objectives. In this manner, the head role is visible to the organization and helps drive the foundation of the Putnam Platform. He or she is a champion for global data management and data quality across the enterprise. This position oversees the Enterprise Information Management (EIM) program and Data Science Center of Excellence. Establish Policies and StandardsEstablish data policies, standards, organization, and administration of EIM concepts. This role also oversees and reports on data metrics and has responsibility for all enterprise information/data management budgeting and initiatives. Manage Data QualityOrganize and carry out policies, procedures, structures, roles, and responsibilities that outline and implement rules of engagement, decision rights, and accountability for the effective management of information assets. The Head of Data Strategy must also figure out the company’s current data quality and maturity levels.Establish Data StandardsEstablish standards and define the critical Reference Databases for Putnam’s future state. Institute Master Data Management processes and define and implement Metadata Management program at Putnam, including Data Lineage, Data Ingestion, and Data consumption. Ultimately rationalize operational, transactional, reporting, and discovery databases into a set of reference databases, reporting and application databases, and discovery or analytics databases. Navigate Unstructured and Big DataTake inventory of unstructured data– the big data challenge– deciding its format, security, ownership, and quality. The result could be new storage needs. This position also resolves which unstructured data should and shouldn’t be collected. Data in the CloudIncorporate cloud computing into implementation plans. Weigh variables like privacy, security, compliance, ownership, and performance questions tied to cloud storage. Establish Business Performance MetricsThe Director of Data Strategy's team must build business performance dashboards: a business performance management system. These provide timely information and insights that enable associates to improve decisions, optimize processes and plans, and work proactively. Maintain Security and PrivacyDecide upon and implement specific data classification, data security, and data privacy requirements for all reference databases, especially as they relate to privacy laws, industry regulations, and corporate compliance mandates.
