Location: Benjamin Banneker Elementary School

Reports To: Principal/Assistant Principal

Starting Date: August 2026

Note: All staff are hired by Milford School District rather than a specific building. While this opening is currently at the location listed above, final placement is subject to change based on district staffing needs.

Position Summary

The Special Education Teacher serves as the lead teacher and primary case manager within a self-contained setting, providing specialized instruction, individualized supports, and behavioral strategies to meet the diverse needs of students with disabilities. The teacher designs and delivers differentiated, standards-based instruction aligned with grade-level and/or alternate standards while addressing students' academic, behavioral, communication, and social-emotional needs. The teacher develops and monitors IEP goals, instructional strategies, and MTSS-aligned supports to promote student engagement, independence, and academic growth. Responsibilities include data collection, progress monitoring, collaboration with families and multidisciplinary teams, and ensuring the implementation of accommodations, modifications, and specially designed instruction to support student success.

Qualifications

Possess or be eligible for a valid Delaware teaching license and be certified as Special Education Teacher of Students with Disabilities in accordance with 14 Del. C. § 1571 Certified as Elementary Teacher in accordance with 14 Del. C. § 1521

Performance Responsibilities

Serve as the lead teacher and primary case manager for an intensive learning self-contained environment, providing specialized instruction and behavioral supports that enable students to successfully access and make progress in the grade-level and/or alternate standards curriculum. Plan and deliver differentiated, standards-based instruction aligned to grade-level academic content while addressing each student's individualized learning, behavioral, communication, and social-emotional needs. Develop, implement, and monitor individualized behavior support plans and instructional strategies that foster positive behavior, increased independence, and improved academic outcomes. Implement evidence-based instructional practices and MTSS-aligned behavioral interventions to promote student engagement, self-regulation, academic achievement, and successful participation in the school environment. Collect, analyze, and utilize academic and behavioral data to monitor student progress, inform instructional decisions, and adjust interventions to maximize student growth. Establish and maintain a structured, safe, supportive, and predictable classroom environment that promotes positive behavior, meaningful learning, and student success. Serve as the case manager for assigned students, ensuring compliance with special education regulations and maintaining accurate and timely documentation, including Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and progress monitoring. Participate actively in IEP meetings by collaborating with families, students, and multidisciplinary team members to develop and implement individualized educational programs that support student success. Ensure the consistent implementation of IEP accommodations, modifications, behavioral supports, and specially designed instruction across educational settings. Support diverse groups of students including needs possibly in the area of behavioral, communication, academic, sensory-motor, personal care and well-being. Collaborate with general education teachers, school psychologists, behavior specialists, related service providers, administrators, and other staff to support students in accessing grade-level curriculum and participating in inclusive educational opportunities whenever appropriate. Utilize a variety of instructional strategies, assistive technology, adaptive materials, and classroom supports to remove barriers to learning and increase student access to academic content. Teach and reinforce social, emotional, communication, and self-advocacy skills that support positive relationships, behavioral success, and academic achievement. Participate in Professional Learning Community (PLC) meetings, grade-level teams, special education department meetings, and ongoing professional learning to improve instructional practices and student outcomes. Maintain effective communication with families regarding student progress, behavioral supports, and instructional programming while fostering collaborative partnerships. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Terms of Employment: Ten-month (10) full-time employee. Salary: Salary schedule is based on experience and degree and can be found on the district website.

Evaluation: Performance will be evaluated annually according to the Board's policy on professional personnel evaluation.
