Water Quality Specialist

Responsibilities Oversee water sampling programs and monitor compliance with regulatory agencies. Collect bacteriological samples at sampling stations; collect water samples at all city sources, including reservoirs and import connections; compile and report monitoring data to regulatory agencies. Review sample results and produce public reports; interpret and implement changes in state and federal water regulations. Review and update the City’s Title 22 Drinking Water Quality Plan. Assist with preparation of water quality reports and conservation initiatives. Oversee the city’s cross‑connection program, coordinating inspections for unauthorized cross‑connections and potential inter‑connections. Coordinate water production and cross‑connection activities with other divisions, outside agencies and organizations. Review construction plans for compliance with cross‑connection program regulations; issue shutdown orders for non‑compliance with city ordinances. Drive city vehicles and travel to offsite locations within and outside the city. Perform related duties as assigned. Experience and Education Two (2) years of experience in water systems. Experience in water quality or cross‑connection program coordination is preferred. Associate’s degree in chemistry, biology, natural science, or a related field; or two (2) additional years of water system experience can substitute for the degree. Licenses and Certificates Valid Class C Driver’s License issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles. AWWA Cross Connection Control Program Specialist Certificate. Grade 2 Water Treatment Operator Certificate issued by the California State Water Resources Control Board. Grade 2 Water Distribution Operator Certificate issued by the California State Water Resources Control Board. Backflow Prevention Device Tester Certification issued by the Orange County Health Care Agency or equivalent (must be acquired prior to completion of one year of employment).
