( Please note: This posting is for individuals who have law enforcement experience and currently meet the requirements for certification as outlined by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement) Posting Closes: TBD Tentative Class Start: October 2026 Starting Salary: $26.65 hourly, $59,589.40 annually (based on 12-hour scheduling) Starting pay is determined based on qualifications and verified prior law enforcement experience. Applicants with full-time sworn experience may qualify for advanced step placement. Sign-on bonuses are available for full-time road patrol assignments, based on verified experience: 2-4 years $5,000; 5-7 years $10,000; 8+ years $15,000. All compensation determinations are subject to verification of experience and approval in accordance with agency policy. Hours: Rotating 12-hour schedule every four (4) months – weekends, evenings, and holidays. Training: All newly hired certified Deputy Sheriff’s (regardless of experience) must go through New Deputy Training (NDT). This training will cover all high liability areas, including driving, shooting, defensive tactics, and agency policies and procedures. After successful completion of NDT, new hires must complete and pass Deputy Training Officer (DTO) training before receiving an assignment. General Description: Under general supervision of a Law Enforcement Sergeant, or designee, performs general law enforcement work of average difficulty and responsibility in the preservation and protection of life and property, the prevention of crime, the maintenance of good public order, the enforcement of civil and criminal law, and other related duties as required by direction or assignment. All assignments involve responsibility for recognizing the social importance of the law enforcement function and for conscientious and effective performance of duties without immediate supervision. Deputy exercises judgment and individual initiative in the performance of routine duties and in emergency situations. Minimum Qualifications: Requirement to meet the standards of the Florida Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission as authorized by F.S.S. 943.13 Must be nineteen (19) years of age A Citizen of the United States Must have and maintain a valid Florida Driver’s License (minimum Class E) High School graduation or equivalent No felony convictions or misdemeanor convictions involving perjury or a false statement No dishonorable or undesirable discharge from any of the Armed Forces of the United States Fingerprints on file with the employing agency Passed a physical examination by a licensed physician based on specification established by the Commission Good moral character as determined by a background investigation under procedures established by the Commission Applicants will undergo a polygraph, psychological examination Must successfully complete the Volusia Sheriff’s Office Field Training and Evaluation Program (FTEP) Background Screening: This position will require an extensive background investigation and drug screening. TOBACCO POLICY: It is this organization’s policy that individuals hired into special risk positions may not use any form of tobacco at any time, whether on or off duty, as a condition of employment. Candidates must be nicotine-free by the time of pre-employment physical/drug examination, including nicotine-containing products used in tobacco replacement therapies. Essential Functions: Testify at trials, hearings or Grand juries Serve injunctions for protection Serve Baker Acts – courts ordered Prepare original and supplemental reports Maintain issued equipment Maintain firearms Inspect and maintain patrol vehicle File complaint affidavits/notice to appear Review Statutes, ordinances, directives Review BOLOs, requests, agreements Maintain notes of warnings, arrests, contacts Update, maintain, review manuals, files Prepare correspondence Seize, impound vehicles or property Seize or confiscate illegal substances Secure found or acquired property Interview victims, witnesses, informants Interview suspects Complete field interrogation reports Investigate crimes against the state Investigate property crimes Initiate persons crimes investigation Search for evidence or suspect Conduct active patrol in assigned area Conduct frisk or pat down search Pursue vehicles Respond to rescue situations Respond to bomb threats Respond to civil unrest or riots Counsel persons involved in disputes Respond to alarm calls Conduct self-initiated arrest Control disorderly or irate persons Serve arrest warrant Transport inmate or arrestee Locate or retrieve body Examine abandoned vehicles Conduct dwelling, ground check Provide information to citizens Investigate, isolate hazardous materials Assist special needs, intoxicated persons Assist other agencies Warn citizens of dangers, hazards Provide security for special functions Conduct traffic stop, traffic controls Conduct DUI investigations Conduct parking enforcement Conduct traffic crash investigation Must adhere to Federal, State, County, and local ordinances. Performs other duties as assigned. Status: Sworn Blood and Viral Pathogen Risk: Foreseeable Risk Environmental Conditions: Work may involve rotating 12-hour shifts Physical acts requiring strength and endurance may be required Works during inclement weather Involves exposure to dangerous and sometimes life-threatening situations, events or persons Works under extreme varying degrees of stress Subject to call 24 hours a day Some exposure to morbid crime scenes involving the human body Works with a firearm and other required weapons Works with a great deal of autonomy requiring discretion and field decision-making May have to inflict bodily harm or kill another human being Must be able to work under stressful conditions Must be able to relocate to other county locations based upon operational needs Must be able to remain available to work when a public emergency or disaster occurs Skills and Abilities: Ability to read and comprehend professional and technical manuals, procedures, journals and documents; legal documents; maps and layouts; memos, reports, summaries and evaluations Ability to write complex documents relaying information, data, and details Ability to operate public address system Ability to conduct pat down, search for weapons Ability to follow commands Ability to recognize basic signs and causes of death Ability to disassemble and reassemble firearm Ability to operate a motor vehicle Ability to speak, read, and write English Ability to use approved defensive weapons Ability to perform minor vehicle maintenance Ability to read gauges and odometers Ability to operate calculator Ability to evaluate Ability to read a map Ability to operate camera Ability to operate tape recorder Ability to listen and understand Ability to detect suspicious activity/circumstances Ability to identify makes and models of vehicles Ability to locate vehicle identification number Ability to evaluate credibility and reliability Ability to recognize informative placard or signs Ability to monitor radio traffic Ability to operate common computers and software Ability to perform basic mathematical functions Ability to communicate clearly and concisely Reading and oral comprehension Keyboarding Interpersonal Organizational Basic investigation Interview Observation Tactical driving Tactical communication Basic crime scene processing Required Knowledge: VSO General Orders and procedures.
