Job Title: RN Surgical Specialty Profession: Registered Nurse Specialty: Surgical/Transplant Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Days Hours per Shift: 36 Experience: 1 year of acute care surgical floor experience License: Current RN License issued by the State Board of Nursing, or a current multistate compact RN License (eNLC) Certifications: Current Basic Life Support issued by the American Heart Association Must-Have: - Knowledge of professional nursing theory, practices, techniques, and procedures - Ability to organize, plan, coordinate, and evaluate nursing services and apply nursing techniques - Ability to maintain good working relationships with other employees - Good verbal and written communication skills - Ability to respond effectively to cultural and language needs of patients and visitors - Some computer skills Description: Under general supervision, provides nursing care in a hospital to a variety of patients with health problems ranging from simple to complex. Assumes responsibility for an assigned group of patients. Documents patient responses to nursing interventions and prescribed medical treatments. Notes all changes in physician orders on assigned patients. Assists physicians in the examination of patients and in performing minor diagnostic procedures and treatments. Obtains and monitors physiological data of patients. Observes the physiological manifestations of patients and intervenes when necessary. Administers medication as prescribed. Initiates, regulates, and monitors intravenous infusions and blood products. Delivers patient care competently. Interacts with family and patients in sharing care plans during hospitalization and at the time of discharge. Informs patients and families of hospital procedures. Makes referrals regarding patient care needs to appropriate personnel. Delegates tasks to support staff. Performs other duties as assigned. Stepdown/PCU experience is preferred. Transplant experience is preferred. The unit cares for post-surgical kidney, liver, and pancreas transplant patients. It also accommodates pre-transplant patients who are being evaluated for transplants during their inpatient stay. Patients require close monitoring for infection, rejection, and timely medication delivery. This position does not involve post-anesthesia care unit responsibilities. Nurses on this floor will work either med/surg or stepdown based on the availability of staff. If short-staffed, ICU nurses may be floated to care for stepdown patients based on acuity and skill set. Preceptor and charge experience are preferred.
