DISTANCE LEARNING LAB ASSISTANT

Distance Learning Lab Assistant

Under general supervision, performs a variety of instructional, technical, and clerical duties to support students enrolled in online courses within a structured lab environment. Employee works collaboratively with the Distance Learning Lab teacher to support student engagement, monitor academic progress, and ensure successful completion of coursework.

Employee provides direct support to a diverse group of learners, ranging from advanced students enrolled in rigorous online coursework to students participating in credit recovery or remediation. The position requires strong technology skills, the ability to build positive relationships with students, and the capacity to support instruction, organization, and classroom management in both the presence and absence of the teacher. Reports to a principal and/or designated teacher.

Essential Job Functions

  • Assists the Distance Learning Lab teacher with implementing and monitoring online instruction and evaluating student progress.
  • Provides direct support to students engaged in online coursework by:
    • Assisting with navigation of learning management systems and digital course platforms
    • Reinforcing and clarifying instructions, assignments, and content
    • Supporting students with pacing, organization, and completion of coursework
    • Providing small group and/or individualized academic support, particularly in English and/or math
    • Implementing approved instructional and assessment accommodations (e.g., read-aloud) in accordance with IEPs, 504 Plans
  • Monitors and tracks student progress by:
    • Tracking grades, assignment completion, and performance
    • Entering and maintaining accurate student data
    • Communicating concerns to the teacher and relevant staff
  • Maintains a structured, supportive learning environment by:
    • Building positive relationships and motivating students with diverse academic needs
    • Monitoring behavior and reinforcing expectations
    • Supporting students with individualized needs in a respectful and discreet manner
  • Supports lab supervision and operations by:
    • Managing the classroom environment and ensuring appropriate use of technology
    • Supervising students and facilitating learning activities, including in the absence of the teacher, as appropriate
    • Assisting with the organization of materials, records, and resources
    • Troubleshooting basic technology issues
  • Communicates effectively with students, staff, and families regarding student progress and needs.
  • Maintains confidentiality of student information in accordance with district, state, and federal guidelines.
  • Supervises students during transitions and extended learning periods, including before or after school lab sessions.
  • Participates in meetings and training aligned with school and district goals.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • General knowledge of instructional practices, classroom routines, and curriculum, with the ability to support instruction across grade-level content, particularly in English and/or math
  • General knowledge of school rules, procedures, and emergency protocols
  • Strong working knowledge of computers, educational technology, and online learning platforms
  • Ability to support and motivate students across a wide range of academic levels, while building positive relationships and encouraging engagement
  • Ability to monitor student progress, maintain accurate records, and perform general clerical duties
  • Ability to maintain a safe, clean, and orderly learning environment while effectively managing student behavior and monitoring student well-being
  • Ability to problem-solve, adapt to student needs, and implement approved accommodations (e.g., read-aloud) in alignment with IEPs and 504 Plans
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally and establish effective working relationships with students, staff, and families
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions

Minimum Training and Experience

High School diploma and either an associate's degree (equivalent hours or higher degree) or demonstration of being highly qualified by completing a local training program and meeting assessment requirements in reading, writing, and math.

Experience working with students in an instructional or technology-supported environment preferred.

Minimum Qualifications or Standards Required to Perform Essential Job Functions

Physical Requirements: Must be able to use a variety of equipment, classroom tools, and technology, including those for children with special needs. Must be able to exert a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Due to the amount of time spent standing and/or walking, physical requirements are consistent with those for Light to Medium Work.

Conceptual Awareness: Requires the ability to observe, compare, and contrast various people, data, or items.

Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes receiving instructions, assignments and/or directions from colleagues or supervisors.

Language Ability: Requires the ability to read and prepare a variety of instructional materials, correspondence, reports, handbooks, forms, lists, etc.

Intelligence: Requires the ability to rationalize and solve problems with a variety of variables, aligned with policies, procedures, and professional expectations.

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in standard English.

Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to use mathematical operations and apply mathematical skills to solve work-related problems; including but not limited to adding, subtracting, and utilizing decimals and percentages.

Motor Coordination & Dexterity: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.

Visual and Spatial Aptitude: Requires visual acuity to complete essential duties, including the ability to conceptualize visual representations, size, shape, and color.

Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with persons acting under stress.

Physical Communication: Requires the ability to talk and hear: (Talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words. Hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear). Must be able to communicate via telephone.
