Custodian, CAT 1Provides custodial care in a building and on the surrounding grounds as assigned by appropriate supervisor.To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the essential job functions satisfactorily. Since every duty associated with this position may not be described herein, employees may be required to perform duties not specifically spelled out in the job description, but which may be reasonably considered to be incidental in the performing of their duties just as though they were actually written out in this job description.Essential Job Functions:Working alone or as a member of a crew maintains a specified area orderly and clean following general instructions regarding the tasks to be performed. The following are typical of the types of custodial duties performed: vacuums, cleans, spot cleans and shampoos rugs and carpets. Sweeps, mops, strips, scrubs, waxes and polishes floors using heavy industrial powered equipment, if required. Washes walls using powered wall washing machines, adjusts, oils, changes pads, brushes, rollers and other attachments on cleaning machines. Washes and replaces venetian blinds, ceiling fixtures and room partitions using ladders. Cleans, disinfects, and deodorizes lavatories, urinals and toilet bowls. Cleans mirrors and water fountains. Dusts furniture, ledges and woodwork. Replaces deodorizers, toilet tissue, hand towels and soap. Replaces burned out lamps. Removes stains from a variety of surfaces such as rugs, drapes, walls, floors and fixtures by use of chemicals and cleaning solutions.The specified area may include any or all of the following: classrooms, connecting corridors, halls, closets, storerooms, offices, toilets, health rooms, furnace rooms, locker rooms, gyms, cafeterias and kitchens. Moves furniture, file cabinets, desks, chairs, boxes, crates, equipment or other obstacles in order to clean up the area.Washes and cleans windows inside and outside of building using window washers, stepladders. Uses brushes, buckets, squeegees, chamois, cleaning cloths and cleaning solutions.Performs seasonal tasks such as the following: Applies ice control material to entrances of building. Shovels snow from steps and walks in the immediate vicinity of assigned building. Picks up litter from immediate area outside building. Mows and waters lawn as specified.Removes scrap and trash cans in all areas inside and outside the building and deposits in a central pick-up container.Notes condition of facilities and reports to supervisor such discrepancies as broken windows, water leaks and such other conditions.Performs other duties as assigned or as required.Minimum Requirements:Have a demonstrated willingness to work and to do any type of custodial assignment deemed necessary.Shall have at least a 9th grade education and be able to read instructions in handling custodial supplies routinely used in custodial work.Must be able to routinely lift heavy objects such as student desks, student chairs and boxes weighing approximately 50 lbs.Must be able to assist with lifting and moving heavy objects over 50 lbs. such as teacher desks, file cabinets and other furniture and equipment.Physical Demands:Heavy Work: Exerting forceful, but not constant, physical effort to perform heavy work, typically involving some combination of balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, walking and may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of heavy objects and materials (up to 50 pounds frequently and occasionally up to 100 pounds, with assistance), visual perception and discrimination, the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds, perceive and discriminate color, perceive odors, and require oral communications.Working Conditions:Employees in this position work in an environment where errors on their part can lead to significant physical or mental consequences for them or others.Benefits:Leave – Sick and Personal (all employees); Vacation (12-month employees)Health, Dental, and Vision Insurance (Single and Family), Life Insurance; these are available to those employees with a minimum 0.6 FTE positionLicensure and/or Certification stipend, if applicableOvertime eligible in excess of 40 hoursTuition ReimbursementMD State Pension, 403(b), credit union membershipSalary – Custodian- Plant Operations Salary ScalePlacement on the salary scale is determined in accordance with the salary placement procedures of Carroll County Public Schools and is based on verified education and relevant experience.
