Senior Bioinformatics Scientist - AI/ML for Protein Engineering

Illumina seeks a Senior Bioinformatics Scientist to develop AI and machine learning methods for protein engineering and enzyme design. The role combines computational approaches with structural biology to advance sequencing platform capabilities, based in San Diego.

Responsibilities

• Develop bioinformatics tools and pipelines for enzyme design, engineering, and discovery
• Apply protein language models and structure-based machine learning to optimize enzyme function
• Evaluate and implement novel computational methods leveraging sequence, structure, and experimental data
• Create reusable templates, scripts, and dashboards for routine analyses and design recommendations
• Analyze high-throughput screening and sequencing data to guide protein optimization

Requirements

• 5+ years related experience with Bachelor's degree, or 3+ years with Master's, or PhD
• Practical experience applying AI/ML methods to protein and enzyme engineering
• Proficiency in Python, C/C++, R, or similar programming language
• In-depth knowledge of protein sequence/structure modeling and molecular simulations
• Strong foundations in statistical modeling, algorithm design, and data analysis
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Collaborative team player with cross-functional integration ability

Compensation: $129,400 - $194,000 base
