Job Title: RN Psych Profession: RN Psych Specialty: RN Psych Duration: 15 Shift: 03:00 PM - 11:30 PM Hours per Shift: 8 Experience: Minimum of 3 years License: BLS certified Certifications: Centralus Naloxone Train the Trainer Course Must-Have: Experience in psychiatric nursing Description: The role is within a 25-bed acute inpatient psychiatry unit. The unit is staffed with at least 5 staff for 18-25 patients, including 3 licensed professionals and 2 support staff. When the patient load is 11-17, there are at least 4 staff members, with 3 being licensed. One RN serves in a charge nurse role, supervising the shift, while another RN oversees all admissions. Medication administration is handled by one nurse (RN or LPN) for all patients during the shift. All RNs are trained in all three positions. There are also float positions staffed by Mental Health Assistants, with the option for RNs or LPNs to participate. Responsibilities include conducting rounds, taking vital signs, distributing meals, providing patient care, and facilitating patient groups. Mental Health Assistants also manage patient assignments similar to nursing staff. Staff positions all take a patient load and are involved in group activities, rounding, and vital signs. The typical patient ratio is up to 5:1 but often less. The patient population primarily includes those presenting with acute psychosis, depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and suicidal or homicidal ideations. For emergent medical issues, 911 should be called for transport to the nearest emergency department. Restraint measures are considered a last resort after de-escalation techniques have been attempted. All nursing and clinical staff are responsible for handling restraints, with security available for additional support during crises.
