Position is renewable subject to performance and/or funding availability. The John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa seeks a dynamic and collaborative physician educator for a unique faculty position based on the island of Hawai‘i. The successful candidate will provide essential leadership in expanding and strengthening clinical training opportunities for JABSOM medical students and residents on that island and in the county. This involves fostering robust partnerships with local hospitals, clinics, and healthcare providers to build sustainable clinical education capacity within the community. Duties and Responsibilities Clinical Education Development and Leadership (Approximately 50‑60%) Serve as a key liaison between JABSOM and Hawai‘i County‑based healthcare institutions, including Hilo Benioff Medical Center, Kona Community Hospital, Queen’s North Hawai‘i Community Hospital, Hawai‘i Health Systems Corporation, community clinics, and private practices. Assist the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in developing and implementing policies, affiliation agreements, or other system‑level initiatives to increase medical education on the island. Collaborate with Hawai‘i healthcare leadership and physicians to identify, develop, and sustain high‑quality clinical rotation sites and experiences for third‑ and fourth‑year medical students and JABSOM residents. Identify and address challenges related to clinical training capacity on Hawai‘i, especially inpatient training capacity, proposing and implementing solutions in collaboration with JABSOM and local partners. Build and maintain strong working relationships with community physicians and healthcare professionals to encourage participation as clinical preceptors and faculty. Actively participate in department or school faculty development activities to promote growth as a medical educator and role model for medical learners. Actively participate in relevant specialty department or JABSOM‑related community medicine or population health activities. Assist in recruitment, onboarding, orientation, and support of community‑based faculty. Work closely with JABSOM Medical Student Rural Education Director, JABSOM Clerkship Directors, Residency Program Directors, and the Office of Medical Education (OME) to coordinate student and resident placements and ensure educational objectives are met. Assure the quality of the clinical and educational experience for residents and medical students by ensuring that the requirements established by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, Liaison Committee on Medical Education, and applicable specialty boards are met and maintained at clinical sites. May involve occasional site visits and quality assessments of clinical learning environments on Hawai‘i. May involve periodic travel to Oʻahu to participate in faculty professional development or curriculum retreats. Supervise the non‑physician outreach coordinator position. Medical Student Education (Approximately 30%) Serve as a Problem‑Based Learning (PBL) tutor/facilitator for first‑ and second‑year medical students. Mentor and advise preclinical medical students. Participate in the assessment of student performance in the PBL curriculum. May involve other teaching activities depending on qualifications and school needs. Service and Scholarly Activity (Approximately 10‑20%) Collaborate with JABSOM neighbor island outreach coordinator, county‑based Area Health Education Center and Health Careers Opportunities Program staff, UH primarily undergraduate institutions, and liaisons with the Hawai‘i State Department of Education, Kamehameha Schools, and other Hawai‘i Association of Independent Schools to develop, expand, and deliver on‑island health career and STEM‑focused activities for students in county K‑12 schools. Collaborate with JABSOM and other UH workforce training programs and infrastructure grants (e.g., INBRE) to expand outreach, exposure, or onsite training programs in the county, as resources allow. Engage in scholarly activities, including quality improvement, patient safety, or policy research, and disseminate findings through publication, presentation, or grant writing related to medical education, clinical practice, or community health, particularly focusing on neighbor island needs. Contribute to the academic and healthcare community on Hawai‘i. Participate in JABSOM, University, and relevant community committees as assigned or appropriate. If in active clinical practice, may serve as a clinical preceptor. Performs related tasks as assigned. Duties and Responsibilities for the Associate Professor Same as Assistant Professor but with increased responsibility for administering programs in education or research and less supervision and oversight. Minimum Qualifications Assistant Professor MD/DO degree from an LCME or AOA accredited medical school. Board certification or qualification in a recognized medical specialty. Unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of Hawai‘i by date of hire. Demonstrated experience in teaching medical students and/or residents in a clinical or classroom setting. Proven ability to work collaboratively and effectively with diverse groups, including community stakeholders. Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication (written and verbal) skills. Professionalism in meeting and conferring with others. Ability to work independently and take initiative in a complex environment. Eligible for a medical staff appointment in good standing with the local hospital and/or health system on the island. Residency or primary work location must be on the island of Hawai‘i. Associate Professor In addition to the Assistant Professor minimum qualifications, a minimum of four years in the rank of Assistant Professor or one year at the rank of Associate Professor at another recognized medical school. Proven ability in teaching, research, or program administration. Evidence of significant scholarly contribution to the clinical specialty or medical education. Ability to serve as a role model for junior colleagues. Desirable Qualifications Minimum of two years of full‑time professional activity in a clinical specialty and teaching experience in a medical school or residency program. Experience in medical education administration, leadership, or curriculum development. Established professional relationships with healthcare providers or institutions on Hawai‘i. Experience developing, managing, or evaluating clinical rotation sites for medical trainees. Prior experience working within the healthcare system on Hawai‘i or another neighboring island. Demonstrated commitment to serving rural or underserved communities. Prior experience with networking and advocacy for improved health of rural or underserved populations.
