About the Position The Division of Oncology, Department of Internal Medicine (DOIM), at the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine, University of Utah and Huntsman Cancer Institute is recruiting an outstanding clinician specializing in gastrointestinal cancers. The selected applicant will be appointed as Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor on the clinical or tenure track, depending on experience and qualifications. The role involves providing clinical care and leading clinical or translational research across the main campus, community, and affiliate hospital locations. The successful candidate will participate in multidisciplinary teams to develop clinical research programs and advance high‑value cancer care across the Intermountain West. The Division of Oncology is one of twelve divisions within the DOIM. Faculty and advanced practice clinicians cover the entire spectrum of medical oncology and are dedicated to high-quality, value-driven patient care, education, and innovation through basic, clinical, population, and health‑services research. The Division is integrated in the Huntsman Cancer Institute, serving the five‑state Mountain West and beyond. Clinical activities are supported by 34 physicians and 30 advanced practice clinicians who provide outpatient and inpatient patient care services at four locations in the Salt Lake Valley, including Huntsman Cancer Institute and the University of Utah Health’s community clinics. Clinical activities include specialty programs such as the Huntsman Acute Care Clinic, Supportive Oncology & Survivorship, Family Cancer Assessment Clinic, and Geriatric Oncology Clinic, among others. The Division also provides outreach services at affiliate hospitals in Rexburg, Idaho; Jackson, Wyoming; and Helena, Montana. The Division of Oncology has one of the most robust clinical‑trial programs in the DOIM and Huntsman Cancer Institute. Research activities are supported by $20 million of extramural funding in FY24, through federal, association/foundation, and industry awards. The Division accounts for 45% of all industry trials, 48% of all investigator‑initiated trials, and 46% of NCI and Cooperative Group Trials at Huntsman Cancer Institute. Clinical research is supported by the Huntsman Cancer Institute Clinical Trials Office, Biospecimen and Molecular Pathology Shared Resource, and other shared resources. The Division is highly committed to the education of fellows, house staff, PhD postdoctoral fellows, and students. Educational activities include a combined Oncology/Hematology Fellowship program, a PhD, MD/PhD, and resident/fellow accelerated Physician‑Scientist Training Program, and various institutional research training programs. Key Responsibilities Provide clinical care for patients with gastrointestinal cancers. Lead and develop clinical or translational research projects. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams on clinical research programs. Engage in teaching, mentoring, and educational activities for fellows, residents, and students. Contribute to departmental and institutional mission of research and patient care. Minimum Qualifications Medical Degree. Board certification in Internal Medicine and eligible for ABIM board certification in Oncology. Eligible for a Utah medical license. Preferred Qualifications Track record of accomplishment as an academic oncologist with clinical excellence. Original contributions to oncology research. National and international visibility. History of extramural research funding. Progressive leadership and administrative experience.
