Medical Science Liaison - Gastroenterology - West

Job Title: Medical Science Liaison – Gastroenterology Location: Cambridge, MA This field-facing role will support medical and scientific exchanges across the Northwest territory, which includes Northern California, Nevada, Oregon, Idaho, Washington, and Montana. The successful candidate must reside in or be willing to relocate to the territory. Overview The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) is responsible for building trusted scientific partnerships with key external experts and decision‑makers, advancing Sanofi’s products through evidence generation and stakeholder engagement, and sharing insights that enrich internal strategy. Main Responsibilities Be the trusted scientific partner to key external experts by conducting timely, appropriate and frequent scientific exchanges. Execute stakeholder engagement plans to gather data, develop and share medical insights that advance Sanofi’s key medical messages. Keep abreast of medical and scientific developments in the therapeutic field to identify research opportunities and support evidence generation plans. Record and share insights that deepen understanding of patient, regulator, payer, and provider needs and identify unmet needs. Maintain effective communication among internal stakeholders (Medical Affairs, Medical Information, Commercial Operations) while ensuring compliance with all company, industry, legal and regulatory requirements. Demonstrate operational understanding and risk management to ensure excellence in governance execution. Key Accountabilities Engage external stakeholders on scientific information exchange through one‑on‑one interactions and group settings. Use deep knowledge of diseases and care protocols to articulate the medical value of products. Establish robust, long‑term peer relationships with Key Opinion Leaders and other stakeholder partners. Advise stakeholders on medical, clinical, epidemiologic and scientific topics within regulatory guidelines. Understand healthcare policies and guidelines at all levels and identify collaboration opportunities. Utilize the Scientific Engagement Model to plan territory, stakeholder engagement, and conference participation. Organize educational meetings or local scientific advisory boards when requested. Support speaker training to ensure continued scientific support in the field. Respond to unsolicited requests for medical information. Gather data and generate insights from stakeholder interactions and provide feedback to the organization. Collaborates Effectively with Internal Stakeholders Distribute relevant scientific and medical information and key insights to internal stakeholders upon request. Collaborate with Commercial Operations, Business Development, Regulatory, and other functions to facilitate diligence, medical evaluation and compliance. Contribute to internal and external material creation following Sanofi policies and applicable regulations. Supports Evidence‑Generation Activities Monitor disease epidemiology and support protocol development for surveillance, pharmacovigilance, and effectiveness studies. Identify data collection opportunities during stakeholder interactions. Maintain awareness of clinical trial activity within the territory and suggest sites as requested. Respond to unsolicited requests regarding investigator‑sponsored studies and support internal submission processes. Context of the Job / Major Challenges Operate independently with minimal supervision in complex regulatory environments. Accommodate substantial travel, nationally and internationally. Balance KOL perspectives with corporate policy to maintain healthy relationships. Respect regulatory boundaries for non‑promotional activities. Scope of Role / Outputs Manage a base of 50 stakeholders and maintain an engagement tracking database. Plan day‑to‑day interactions in line with Medical Affairs strategy. Report KOL activities to Medical Affairs. Execute a defined KOL territory strategy aligned with company objectives. Develop relevant territory engagement plans to support the medical strategy. Use approved scientific data during KOL interactions. Qualifications Advanced degree in a technical, scientific or medical field (MD, PhD, PharmD) required. Valid driver’s license and clean driving record; ability to pass a background check. Must operate a company vehicle safely and comply with all policies. Must reside in the Northwest territory; relocation not required if already within territory. Experience Minimum of 2 years in the pharmaceutical industry, MSL role, or relevant clinical practice; additional experience is an asset. MSL experience is strongly preferred. Relevant immunology clinical experience in gastroenterology and/or rhinology may be considered. Clear understanding of medical practice, clinical decision making and healthcare systems. Ability to interpret scientific data for educational and research needs. Demonstrated delivery of evidence‑based data to address educational and research needs. Understanding of research study design and execution. Exemplary communication and presentation skills. Experience in multidisciplinary teams and managing significant volume of projects. Skills / Knowledge Active listening and confident articulation of expert opinion while respecting others. Professional communication to build strong internal and external relationships. Strong planning, prioritization and execution of multiple responsibilities. Leadership skills and ability to handle challenges within scope of authority. Deep knowledge of local regulations and codes governing non‑promotional activities. Scientific expertise and the ability to translate expert feedback into insights. Knowledge of healthcare systems, regulatory and payer environments, public health and industry trends. Proficiency in digital tools. The salary range for this position is: $146,250.00 - $211,250.00 All compensation will be determined commensurate with demonstrated experience.
