Position Title Skilled Maintenance Worker - Plumber Reports To Director of Facilities Position Summary The Skilled Maintenance Worker maintains the physical school plant in a condition of operating excellence so that full educational use of district facilities may be made at all times. The position performs skilled maintenance and repair work in the employee's area of specialty while also assisting other maintenance and trade specialists as required. Responsibilities may include plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, grounds maintenance, and other general facility maintenance duties. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Accurately order and account for materials and labor relative to assigned projects and work. Maintain all applicable safety and code requirements established by the State, local authorities, and the Board of Education. Plan, supervise, and participate in general maintenance work inside and outside of the physical plant, including: Walls and ceilings Woodwork Roofing Electrical systems Plumbing systems and fixtures Rough and finish carpentry Concrete and masonry Glazing Insulation Tile Pumps and fans Perform district-wide grounds maintenance, including plowing, salting, field marking, and maintenance of underground sprinkler systems. Perform independently in the employee's area of specialty and assist other trade specialists as required. Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair plumbing fixtures and systems. Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair electrical power and lighting systems as assigned and within applicable licensing requirements. Establish and follow appropriate safety practices for themselves, district personnel, and personnel working under their supervision. Assist in providing cost estimates for repairs, installations, and maintenance projects. Operate motorized equipment related to assigned tasks. Recommend supplies and equipment for purchase. Maintain an inventory of district-owned hand tools, equipment, hardware, materials, and supplies. Complete other maintenance-related tasks as deemed appropriate by the Director of Facilities and/or Superintendent. Additional Duties and Responsibilities Communicate accurate and up-to-date information to students and staff in a manner that supports district operations. Manage time effectively and appropriately prioritize assignments. Cooperate and communicate professionally with administration, parents, students, and coworkers. Create and maintain a positive and professional work environment. Take appropriate precautions to protect district equipment, materials, facilities, and property. Maintain accurate and complete records as required by the school district. Attend and participate in onsite and district meetings as required. Complete duties and assignments as directed. Use appropriate conflict-resolution skills. Demonstrate effective public relations and interpersonal skills. Use appropriate techniques, strategies, equipment, and materials to successfully complete assigned work. Use current technology for maintenance, communication, recordkeeping, and management purposes as needed. Be available to support district operations outside of the regular school day when needed. Report suspected child abuse or neglect in accordance with district and state requirements. Act as a positive role model within the school and district community. Develop and utilize appropriate community and professional resources. Demonstrate concern for the safety and well-being of students, staff, and others. Supervisory Responsibilities May provide direction, assistance, or supervision to other maintenance staff as assigned. May oversee personnel working under their direction at assigned work sites. Responsible for maintaining safe work practices and ensuring assigned work is completed appropriately. Required Qualifications Must hold a current JPG license or a current Plumber's License / MM-1. Must hold a current Construction Industries license, as applicable to assigned duties. Must possess a valid driver's license. Must have the ability to pass a required background check. Must maintain all required licenses and certifications in good standing throughout employment. Must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the essential functions of the position. Must be able to work effectively and professionally with district employees, students, administration, and the public. Preferred Qualifications Experience in commercial, institutional, school district, or facilities maintenance. Experience performing plumbing, HVAC, electrical, or general building maintenance. Experience troubleshooting and repairing mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and facility systems. Experience operating maintenance equipment and power tools. Experience working independently and managing multiple maintenance assignments. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of plumbing systems, fixtures, equipment, and repair procedures. Knowledge of applicable safety practices, building codes, and maintenance procedures. Ability to troubleshoot and repair plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and general facility systems within the scope of applicable licenses and qualifications. Ability to read and interpret basic plans, diagrams, instructions, and technical information. Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, motorized equipment, and other maintenance equipment. Ability to estimate materials and labor required for assigned projects. Ability to maintain accurate records and inventories. Ability to prioritize assignments and manage time effectively. Ability to work independently while also working cooperatively with other maintenance personnel. Ability to communicate effectively with staff, administration, students, and the public. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions. Ability to respond appropriately to emergency maintenance situations. Commitment to maintaining safe, clean, and functional district facilities. Physical Requirements The employee must be able to: Stand and walk for extended periods. Use hands and fingers to handle, manipulate, or feel objects, tools, equipment, or controls. Reach with hands and arms to operate machinery and equipment. Squat, stoop, kneel, bend, twist, and reach above the head. Climb ladders and access elevated work areas. Work in confined or difficult-to-access areas as required. Frequently lift and/or move items weighing up to 50 pounds. Occasionally lift and/or move items weighing up to 90 pounds. Push and pull items such as tables, scaffolds, and cabinets. Demonstrate sufficient close, peripheral, and depth perception to safely perform job duties. Safety and Health Requirements The employee must complete and maintain required district safety training, which may include: Child Abuse/Substance Abuse Workshop Bloodborne Pathogens Standard Training Other required district, state, or department safety training The employee is expected to follow all applicable safety procedures and use appropriate personal protective equipment when performing assigned duties. Equipment and Materials Handled The employee must know how to properly operate, or be willing to learn to operate, equipment and materials necessary to perform assigned duties, including: Hand tools Power tools Plumbing equipment Electrical and mechanical equipment Motorized maintenance equipment Ladders and related access equipment District maintenance vehicles and equipment Current technology and multimedia equipment as needed Work Environment The employee will work both indoors and outdoors and may be exposed to: Moving mechanical equipment. Plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and other mechanical systems. Toxic or caustic chemicals, including petroleum products, degreasers, sprays, and non-household dust. Varying temperatures and weather conditions. Moderate or occasionally loud noise levels. Time-sensitive or emergency maintenance situations. Physically demanding work requiring climbing, bending, lifting, reaching, and working in confined spaces.
