RN - Med Surg

Registered Nurse (RN)This facility is a 492-bed Level I Trauma Center featuring a Level III NICU and a Primary Stroke Center.Traveler Information:First-time travelers are welcome; a minimum of 18 months of MedSurg and/or ICU experience with EPIC or Cerner is required. If the applicant has strictly ICU experience, Cerner is mandatory.Staff must be away for 6 months before returning as a traveler, calculated from the last shift worked to the new start date.Upon starting, nurses will be assigned a specific home unit during orientation.Patient Ratios:Typical RN patient ratios are 1:4, with expectations for high-quality care and additional responsibilities such as assisting with ADLs, turning patients, and bathing.Unit Information:6 North Trauma Surgical:Beds: 23Patient Types: General Surgery and Vascular surgeriesSkills Required: At least 1 year of trauma/surgical experience, including wound care, chest tubes, NGT, IV skills, and medication administration/documentation.5 South Neuroscience:Beds: 33Patient Types: CVA, TBI, Seizure, AMS, Spinal Fusion, Craniotomy, Degenerative Diseases, post trauma, angiogramSkills Required: IV starts, blood draws from central lines, trach care, PEG, NGT, colostomy/ostomy, wound care, chest tube management, surgical site care, and restraint application.5 North MedSurg/Oncology:Beds: 39, with 2 Charge RNs (no patient assignment)Patient Types: All patient types except stroke and MI, palliative care, and ETOH withdrawal. Focused on high acuity and fast-paced MedSurg.Skills Required: Trach care, chest tubes, PEG tubes, wound care, drains, foley catheter management, IV starts; chemo administration, if certified.Tele monitoring supported by hallway monitors and tele techs.3 South Orthopedics:Beds: 20Patient Types: Orthopedic and spine cases including joint replacements, fractures, and fusions.Skills Required: PCA pumps, wound care (negative pressure dressings), dressing changes, foley management, and drain handling (hemovacs/JP drains).3 North MS/Ortho/Urology:Beds: 23Patient Types: Urology, ENT, orthopedic, and MedSurgSkills Required: Trach care, wound care, wound vac management, IV starts, and central vascular line dressing changes.Required Certifications:BLSNIHSSSupport and Technology on the Unit:CNA Support: 1:10-12 ratio for patient care tasks.Receptionist/HUC available.Charge Nurse: Available but rarely takes an assignment.Phlebotomy and IV/VAT teams are present.Telemetry monitoring techs are utilized in management; RNs are required to interpret telemetry strips every four hours.Orientation and Scheduling:Travelers new to the facility will receive 24 hours of classroom time followed by 24 hours on the unit.Rehires' orientation duration will depend on their last date of service.Weekend rotation is required every other week or four weekend days per month.One major and one minor seasonal holiday off is expected.Requests for time off can be approved up to 7 days, excluding specified blackout dates.
