POSITION SUMMARY

The Field Engineer serves as the designated Site Engineer and provides onsite technical, administrative, and project-controls support for assigned construction projects. This position assists the Project Manager and Site Superintendent with planning, coordination, execution, and monitoring to support completion in accordance with contract requirements, schedules, budgets, quality standards, safety requirements, issued-for-construction drawings, specifications, and approved work packages.

The Field Engineer supports cost management and analysis, scheduling, procurement, subcontractor coordination, project documentation, billing, and other day-to-day project operations. Work may include heavy civil, site-development, utility-infrastructure, commercial, and light-industrial construction. The position works closely with project management, field supervision, subcontractors, vendors, clients, quality control, ES&H personnel, and other stakeholders to facilitate communication, resolve project issues, and maintain accurate and timely project information.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Project Operations & Coordination

• Supports the Project Manager and Site Superintendent with day-to-day construction operations, project coordination, and execution.
• Maintains regular communication with project leadership regarding field conditions, schedule progress, procurement needs, risks, technical issues, and decisions requiring attention.
• Reviews issued-for-construction drawings, specifications, approved submittals, work packages, contract requirements, and applicable codes to support field execution and identify conflicts or discrepancies.
• Assists with field layout, dimensions, elevations, grades, quantities, and constructability reviews for earthwork, roads, utilities, concrete, buildings, and related systems.
• Coordinates technical questions, Requests for Information (RFIs), design clarifications, sketches, and field changes with the project team and documents direction and resolution.
• Coordinates with subcontractors and vendors regarding scopes of work, schedules, deliverables, materials, and project requirements.
• Participates in preconstruction, pre-job, progress, coordination, and weekly project meetings, as well as jobsite walkdowns, pre-evolution briefings, daily planning reviews, and post-job reviews when required.

Project Controls, Cost & Scheduling

• Assists with development, maintenance, and monitoring of short-term and long-term schedules, including progress, milestones, procurement activities, and potential schedule impacts.
• Monitors project costs, quantities, commitments, production information, and installed work; assists with cost reports and forecasts.
• Establishes and maintains accurate billing quantities and supports project billings, payment documentation, and other required cost information.
• Prepares and maintains daily job-cost reporting and other project reports as required.
• Identifies project risks, conflicts, differing conditions, and potential cost or schedule impacts; communicates them promptly and supports development of practical corrective actions.

Project Safety & Compliance

• Promotes and maintains a safe project site in accordance with Aleut policies, client requirements, OSHA requirements, DOE-site requirements, and established safety programs.
• Participates in safety meetings, inspections, briefings, work-package reviews, and other safety activities as required.
• Verifies that current approved work documents are available to personnel performing the work and that activities remain within the defined scope and sequence.
• Exercises stop-work responsibility and immediately notifies project leadership when work scope is unclear, controls are inadequate, unexpected hazards arise, or work cannot be performed as written.

Procurement & Subcontractor Management

• Coordinates material and equipment procurement activities, including identifying needs, tracking approvals, expediting materials, and facilitating delivery and transportation to the project site.
• Assists with development and administration of subcontractor scopes of work.
• Coordinates with subcontractors to monitor performance, schedules, documentation, and compliance with assigned scope and project requirements.
• Tracks material, equipment, and subcontractor requirements to support project schedules and field operations.

Project Documentation, Quality & Contract Administration

• Maintains accurate daily field reports documenting labor, equipment, materials, weather, work activities, inspections, testing, schedule progress, site conditions, significant events, and photographs.
• Maintains organized drawing logs, submittal and RFI status, inspection records, quantity records, correspondence, and other project documentation needed for contract compliance, reporting, billing, and closeout.
• Supports quality-control activities, including inspections, testing requirements, acceptance criteria, corrective actions, and documentation of nonconforming or potentially deficient work.
• Supports change management by gathering supporting documentation, tracking changes, and identifying potential cost or schedule impacts.
• Supports punch-list completion, testing, commissioning, training, record drawings, warranties, operations and maintenance documentation, turnover packages, and final project closeout.

Team & Project Support

• Facilitates the timely flow of project information between project leadership, field personnel, subcontractors, vendors, clients, and other stakeholders.
• Provides day-to-day work direction and coordination to assigned project support personnel, which may include project clerks and engineering interns.
• Performs assigned duties and project tasks independently with minimal direction, escalating significant issues to project leadership as appropriate.
• Develops effective working relationships and follows assigned activities through completion while keeping project leadership informed of status and concerns.
• The Field Engineer must be physically present at the jobsite whenever subcontractor personnel are performing fieldwork. If primary and alternate personnel are assigned, at least one approved Field Engineer must be onsite during all fieldwork.
• Performs other duties as assigned within the scope of the position to support project and business operations.

EDUCATION/TRAINING

• A bachelor's degree in engineering, civil engineering, construction management, or a similar field may be used with the experience alternative stated below.
• An associate's degree or applied technology degree in construction management, engineering, or a similar field may be used with the experience alternative stated below.
• Additional construction management, scheduling, project controls, safety, or industry-specific training is preferred.
• Must complete all required project-specific orientation, safety, security, badging, and work-control training.

EXPERIENCE

Candidates must meet one of the following experience and education combinations:

• A minimum of five (5) years of experience as a field engineer on projects of similar type and magnitude; or
• A minimum of three (3) years of field engineering experience plus a bachelor's degree in construction management, engineering, or a similar field; or
• A minimum of three (3) years of field engineering experience plus an associate's degree or applied technology degree in construction management, engineering, or a similar field.
• Comparable project experience includes heavy civil, site-development, commercial, or light-industrial construction of similar scope and magnitude. Relevant work may include earthwork and grading, haul roads and spoil areas, site stabilization, overhead and underground electrical distribution, duct banks, water lines, sanitary sewer or effluent systems, cast-in-place or slab-on-grade concrete, pre-engineered metal buildings, plumbing, HVAC, and interior finishes.
• Experience supporting construction through multiple phases of execution, including scheduling, cost tracking, procurement, subcontractor coordination, documentation, and closeout.
• Experience with project cost reporting, billing quantities, job-cost tracking, subcontractor scope coordination, federal or DOE projects, and work-package execution is preferred.

SKILLS/ABILITIES

• Working knowledge of construction methods, terminology, drawings, specifications, scheduling, project controls, and construction documentation.
• Ability to read, interpret, and cross-reference civil, structural, architectural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing drawings, specifications, contracts, and scopes of work.
• Ability to verify dimensions, elevations, grades, quantities, and installed conditions using appropriate field measurements and project controls.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify project issues, evaluate information, document decisions, and follow issues through resolution.
• Ability to organize and maintain cost information, schedules, procurement logs, submittals, RFIs, daily reports, inspection documentation, and project correspondence.
• Demonstrated ability to maintain daily job-cost reporting and track project quantities and costs.
• Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in an active construction environment.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills with the ability to interact professionally with clients, agencies, subcontractors, vendors, management, and field personnel.
• Ability to work independently with general direction while collaborating effectively as part of a project team.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and familiarity with construction document-control, PDF-markup, and field-management systems.
• Working knowledge of Primavera P6, JDE, HCSS, Trimble Business Center, road-design software, or comparable construction management, scheduling, estimating, and cost-control systems is preferred.
• Ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain professionalism, integrity, and confidentiality when handling project and business information.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

• Regularly operates a computer and other office equipment, requiring repetitive hand, wrist, and finger movements.
• Frequently communicates with employees, subcontractors, clients, and other project personnel in person, by telephone, and through electronic communication.
• Regularly sits, stands, and walks for extended periods.
• Frequently walks through active construction areas and may be required to navigate uneven terrain, stairs, ladders, temporary walkways, and other jobsite conditions.
• May occasionally bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, or climb as necessary to access and observe project work areas.
• Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment while on the project site.
• May occasionally lift, carry, push, or pull materials, documents, equipment, or other items weighing up to 35 pounds.
• Must have sufficient visual and auditory ability to observe construction activities, review plans and documentation, and safely navigate an active construction environment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The working conditions for this position may include the following:

• This is an onsite position where work is primarily performed at an assigned construction project location, including both the project office and active construction areas.
• Work may be performed indoors and outdoors and may involve varying or extreme weather conditions depending on project location.
• Regular exposure to active construction operations involving heavy equipment, moving machinery, construction vehicles, elevated noise, dust, dirt, fumes, odors, electrical or mechanical hazards, excavations, uneven surfaces, and temporary structures.
• Work may be performed at a client-controlled or DOE-controlled site where additional access controls, training, monitoring, and personal protective equipment are required.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

• Must possess a valid and unrestricted driver's license.
• Must be able to pass required pre-employment background screening and meet applicable project substance-abuse-program requirements.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain required base or site access, security badges, and project training qualifications.
• Must maintain availability and onsite coverage necessary to satisfy the position's key-personnel requirements throughout field execution.
• Must be available to work the schedule necessary to support project requirements, which may include extended hours, off-hours work, 10-hour project workdays, and schedule adjustments based on construction activities, project milestones, operational needs, or emergency response requirements.
• Must be able to travel locally or to other project locations as required; travel may be up to 10 percent.
