Position Summary

The Principal Mechanical Engineer leads engineering design and project execution for rotating machinery control assemblies in various industrial sectors. This role is responsible for overseeing projects, both large and small, providing technical and safety leadership, and mentoring junior engineers. In addition to typical project design execution, the Principal Mechanical Engineer ensures the financial and operational success of the business unit (BU), establishes engineering standards, and fosters strategic relationships with clients and partners. Strong technical expertise, leadership, and communication skills are critical for success.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Lead engineering and design efforts from project conception through commissioning
• Use customer’s existing machinery drawings and documentation to assess mechanical-hydraulic control systems for decommissioning or modification required by the project’s new technical requirements
• Develop designs and hydraulic schematics, P&IDs, and assembly drawings for hydraulic power units, hydraulic actuators, hydraulic trip systems, etc. including their integration into the machinery’s existing installation
• Size and select pumps, instrumentation, piping / tubing, and other auxiliary equipment for rotating machinery
• Prepare and review engineering and construction documents, drawings, and specifications
• Utilize 3D CAD software (e.g., Autodesk Inventor) to model sub-assemblies and related piping / tubing systems
• Work with suppliers to assess and select off-the-shelf components for integration into the system design
• Coordinate multi-disciplinary designs to ensure cohesive and complete deliverables, including process, electrical / controls, mechanical, plumbing, structural, and civil engineering as necessary
• Work with project managers to coordinate project schedules, budgets, etc.
• Mentor and guide junior engineers, fostering their development and career growth
• Conduct internal design reviews and reviews with clients, incorporating feedback to refine designs
• Provide technical support for the commissioning and startup of delivered systems
• Cultivate long-term strategic relationships with clients, foster trust and repeat business
• Present technical expertise at regional and national conferences
• Assist sales and commercial personnel with conceptual system designs, customer presentations, industrial trade shows, etc.
• Develop, maintain and communicate engineering standards and stay updated on emerging technologies
• Responsible for understanding, staying updated on, and abiding by the Wunderlich-Malec Employee Handbook as written

Qualifications/Requirements

• Advanced technical knowledge of mechanical machinery, auxiliary equipment, piping systems, etc.
• Proficiency in 3D CAD software, including Autodesk Inventor, Solidworks, or similar
• Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
• Strong analytical and organizational skills with attention to detail
• Excellent organizational and time management skills to prioritize and manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and in peer leadership roles
• Works well in dynamic and high stress environments
• Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and typical office software

Education/Experience

• Bachelor's degree (B. S.) from a four-year college or university in Mechanical Engineering is preferred. An AA in Engineering Technology or equivalent with demonstrated experience may be substituted.
• 10-25+ years of experience
• Experience leading engineering teams and mentoring staff
• Familiarity with regulatory and industry standards, including OSHA, ASME, API, etc.

Supervisory Responsibilities

• Mentoring junior engineers
• No direct supervisory responsibilities

• Office / Shop Work:
  • Office desk/cubicle environment; Significant computer use
  • Shop work with hand and power tools, pressurized hydraulic systems, etc. in a light fabrication / assembly / testing environment

• Site Work:
  • Up to 30% travel to commercial power plants and industrial facilities
  • Execute or direct demo. and installation work related to project scope of supply
  • Comply with all Company safety guidelines and requirements for site work

• On-Site working conditions may include:
  • Work around rotating machinery and related industrial equipment
  • Work in hot or cold areas
  • Work in noisy areas
  • Work up and down stairs, ladders and scaffolds, indoors and outdoors
  • Working and interfacing with operations, maintenance, engineering, equipment supply, and construction personnel
  • Typical Personnel Protective Equipment (PPE) required: safety glasses, safety-toed shoes, hearing protection, and electrical safety PPE. Employees must comply with customer specific requirements and PPE.

Work may include working weekends, holidays, nightshift, and extended hours, both in-office and at customer locations, to meet project deadlines and commissioning requirements.

Salary Range The expected salary range is $115k to 160k per year depending on qualifications plus a discretionary bonus and employee stock program.
