Employee Health Nurse

Job Summary Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) is seeking a Nurse II – Employee Health Nurse located in Austin, TX. The role involves promoting employee health and well‑being through education, immunizations, and wellness initiatives while providing nursing support across the agency. Responsibilities Provide new employees with education and immunizations (Hepatitis series, Td/Tdap, influenza, tuberculin skin test) and maintain an immunization file. Send reminders for subsequent vaccinations and track employee health information in the agency database. Serve as an active member of the Hospital Wellness Committee, organize an annual health fair, coordinate blood drives, and lead agency wellness initiatives. Facilitate employee access to general medical services and coordinate with Risk Management for on‑job injuries and occupational exposures. Conduct systematic assessments of injuries, document findings, and collaborate with Risk Management to reduce worker’s compensation costs. Coordinate occupational exposure follow‑up, including education, supportive documentation, laboratory coordination, and quarterly infection control reports. Maintain a clean therapeutic environment, ensuring proper medication storage and refrigerator temperature control per Joint Commission standards. Assist the Nurse Educator with competency development for tuberculin skin testing during new nurse orientation. Provide cross‑departmental coverage for general medical services (LVN) when needed. Follow up on recall notices for medical equipment and supplies and remove recalled items promptly. Participate in disaster response, recovery, or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation, which may require alternate shift patterns or locations. Work a regular day shift with potential for rotating schedule, overtime, and extended hours in accordance with agency leave policy. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) Knowledge of the Texas Nurse Practice Act, HHSC policies, and the Recovery Model of Care. Knowledge of professional nursing standards (CPR, infection control practices, worker’s compensation policies). Knowledge of management theory, organizational planning, and performance improvement. Competence in nursing techniques and procedures. Strong coaching and training skills, including the ability to instruct, evaluate, and provide guidance. Ability to organize and communicate information orally and in writing. Time‑management skills and the ability to intervene therapeutically with patients experiencing psychiatric disorders. Skill in administering restraint and seclusion, as well as life‑saving procedures such as CPR, Heimlich, AED, and first aid. Licensure and Certifications Registered Nurse (RN) licensed in Texas or a compact state recognized by the Nurse Licensure Compact. Valid Texas driver’s license required if transporting patients. Initial Screening Criteria Graduation from an accredited nursing program or a four‑year college/university with major coursework in nursing. At least one year of RN experience in a recognized health agency, hospital, or health care facility. Preferred Experience Experience working with employee health issues. Experience administering immunizations. Additional Requirements Pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre‑employment drug screen, and applicable registry checks. Comply with HHSC immunization policy and state hospital operating procedures related to immunizations.
