and performs related duties as required.**Cadets starting monthly salary of $3,750.00.** **After successful completion of one (1) year probationary period salary will increase to $3,982.00****Duties and Responsibilities*** Controls, secures and manages inmates at the Adult Detention Center and Jail Annex* Supervises inmates assigned to work detail such as serving meals, preparing laundry, and performing routine maintenance in the jail facility* Books and classifies inmates* Transfers and transport inmates* Performs inmate inspections, shakedowns and room searches* Responds to and resolves crisis situations such as fights, fires and medical emergencies and restraining physically violent inmates* Assists with inmates personal needs such as telephone calls, mail, laundry, visits and commissary* Completes and processes required paperwork on inmates and events occurring within the jail facilities* Performs related duties as required**Minimum Qualifications*** Graduation from High School or a General Education Development (GED) certificate* Knowledge of jail environment work; knowledge of basic safety standards and procedures* Skill in communicating effectively, both verbally and in writing; skill in defending self* Ability to read and comprehend narrative hand-written materials, including pass-on logs, round sheets, caution tags, cell search logs, etc* Ability to read and comprehend printed materials, such as Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), fire procedures, and the Inmate Handbook* Ability to read and comprehend computer screen information and data when booking individuals* Ability to prepare hand-written activity logs, and narrative incident and offense reports in a legible and grammatically acceptable manner to permit comprehension by the receiving party* Ability to understand and exchange information with supervisors and co-workers when receiving assignments, instructions, shift change information, and while performing assigned duties and tasks* Ability to understand and exchange information with the general public, including attorneys, jail visitors, and maintenance personnel* Ability to interact with inmates, and to understand and comprehend inmate responses to questions* Ability to provide verbal direction to inmates to affect conformance to rules, regulations, and other directives* Ability to add and subtract when taking prisoner counts and reconciling discrepancies* Must be a United States citizen* Must have no prior arrest records for: driving while intoxicated, driving while impaired, no possession or trafficking of illegal narcotics or drugs, assault, stalking, family violence, theft, crimes of moral turpitude, or sexual offenses* Military applicants must disclose any non-judicial discipline involving the Uniform Code of Military Justice* Must have never been on court-ordered community supervision or probation for any criminal offense above the grade of a Class B misdemeanor or within the last ten (10) years from the date of the court order* Must not be currently under indictment for any criminal offense* Must have never been convicted of an offense above the grade of a Class A misdemeanor or a Class B misdemeanor within the last ten (10) years; must have never been convicted of any family violence offense* Must not be prohibited by state or federal law from operating a motor vehicle* Must not be prohibited by state or federal law from possessing firearms or ammunition* Must not have a felony conviction or be on probation* Requires honorable discharge if a veteran* Requires completion of the Bexar County Sheriff's Office written Exam* Must pass a physical agility test* Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation from the Bexar County Sheriff's Office* Must pass a psychological and physical exam; must secure and maintain TCOLE Basic Jailer Certification within one year from employment date* Must possess a valid driver's license* May work weekends and perform shift work* May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek**Working Conditions and Physical Demands**:* Visual capabilities: Ability to detect abnormal behavior and extraordinary activities when observing the actions of an inmate or group of inmates; ability to prepare a written description of personal property and accurately observe inmates; ability to detect smoke from cigarettes, electrical fires, etc.* Auditory Capabilities: Ability to hear alarms; ability to hear and understand information received over the telephone and intercom; ability to distinguish between normal jail sounds and sounds indicating impending, improper or unacceptable behavior such as altercations, fights, assaults, etc. Hearing must be within the normal range as defined by nationally recognized audiometric standards, or that surpasses the normal range. Olfactory Capabilities: Ability to detect the presence of smoke from cigarettes, electrical fires, etc.; ability to detect the presence of alcoholic beverages or illegal drugs* Physical Capabilities: Physical requirements include lifting/carrying/struggling/pulling inmates or equipment weighing approximately 150-200 lbs. occasionally; ability to lift weights up to 40 pounds when lifting and positioning Scott Air Pack on back; ability to climb stairs when moving within cell blocks; ability to work in a standing position for extended periods of time when observing and monitoring inmates, checking cells, escorting inmates, etc.; ability to bend, stoop, and kneel when checking under tables, beds, and mattresses during cell searches; finger dexterity, and hand and arm steadiness when adjusting knobs and switches, and operating computer keyboard; eye, hand, and arm coordination when fingerprinting individuals* Working conditions are inside a jail environment with occasional exposure to hostile or violent people, bodily injury, contagious diseases, high noise areas, and unfavorable fumes and odors**Supplemental Information**To schedule the exam, you will need to email View email address on click.appcast.io and provide your name, telephone number, email address and age. The applicant will be given a certain time limit to compete the whole exercise; the time given to the applicant will vary by age. Once the proctor has given the instructions he will ask the applicants if they are ready to begin the test and understand what the disqualifications consist of. If the applicant understands the instructions then the test will begin as soon as the proctor says "Begin". Once the exercise is completed and passed the applicant will then WALK to the next obstacle where further instructions will be given. ***Helpful Tips*:** Practice at home on a single step or a stair stepper found at a local gym. Practice alternating each foot as to replicate that you are walking up a flight of stairs.
