Specialty Materials Chemist, Pyrotechnics or Propulsion

Role Overview

Help evaluate how advanced AI systems handle technical questions involving energetic materials and propulsion. You will create realistic, challenging scenarios that distinguish legitimate professional requests from harmful misuse, then assess whether model responses apply the required safety standard correctly.

Key Responsibilities

• Write single-turn domain prompts classified as benign, dual-use, or adversarial.
• Evaluate model responses against a defined policy standard and determine whether each response was handled appropriately.
• Develop reference answers that show the correct response and explain the technical reasoning behind it.
• Apply practitioner judgment to boundary cases, including routine thermal-stability, formulation, sensitivity, and handling questions that may resemble misuse-oriented requests.
• Document each judgment with a clear written rationale that non-specialists can understand.

Qualifications

• Hands-on experience formulating, synthesizing, and testing specialty energetic materials in a licensed or government facility.
• Ability to distinguish valid professional work involving propellants, display compositions, sensitivity data, or production safety from requests intended to enable harmful activity.
• Relevant experience may include pyrotechnic, propellant, or specialty energetic-material formulation; synthesis and characterization of energetic compounds; calorimetry, thermal-stability testing, or small-scale safety testing; scale-up and process safety; or solid or liquid rocket propellant development involving binders, oxidizers, or burn-rate modifiers.
• Strong technical writing skills. Published research, prior technical writing, expert-witness experience, or a writing sample or link is valued.
• Red-teaming experience is preferred.

Work Terms

• Remote, per-task independent-contractor work.
• The work is writing-intensive and involves reading and writing about misuse scenarios for sustained periods.
• You will receive advance briefing on this aspect of the work and may pause or step away at any time without penalty.

Compensation

$65 to $75 per task.
