Controller

Controller Location: Hybrid — 3 days in Washington, DC office A well-established nonprofit organization is seeking a Controller to lead the day-to-day operations of its Finance department. Reporting to the CFO, this role will oversee a small team and partner with executive leadership and department heads on financial reporting, budgeting, compliance, and process improvement. Responsibilities Lead daily accounting and finance operations while ensuring compliance with GAAP and applicable regulations. Oversee and develop a small finance team. Manage financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and month-end close activities. Partner with the CFO and senior leadership on financial analysis and organizational planning. Evaluate and improve finance processes, systems, and internal controls. Identify opportunities to increase efficiency, eliminate backlogs, and improve service to internal stakeholders. Leverage financial technology and refine procedures to strengthen the department's effectiveness. Collaborate with department leaders and executive-level stakeholders on budgets and financial reporting. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. 7+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience, including management experience. Experience leading or supervising a finance/accounting team. Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting. Experience with Sage Intacct strongly preferred. Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills. Experience working in a nonprofit or mission-driven organization is a plus. CPA is not required, but is a plus.
