MUST have EPIC experience – going through EPIC conversion in Q2 2026

Unit Overview

• Unit: Med Surg / Tele – Inpatient Surgical (3rd Floor)
• Beds: 48 (two buildings)
• Nurse:Patient Ratios:
  • Nights: 1:4–6
  • LPNs available
  • Virtual admission and discharge nurses assist
  • Primary care nursing model frequently used (must be comfortable with this)

Required Certifications

• BLS
• NIHSS

Common Diagnoses / Patient Types

Neuro surgical and post-op patients including:

• Laminectomy, cervical fusion, LESI
• Abdominal surgery (ostomies, hernia repair)
• Total joint replacement (hips/knees)
• Fem-pop bypass
• Dialysis catheter insertions
• BKA / AKA
• Diabetes (dialysis also located on 3rd floor)
• Sepsis, chronic pain, narcotic management
• PCA, epidurals (some cases)
• IV antibiotics, urgent OR cases

Must-Have Skills / Experience

• Minimum 1 year surgical experience required
• Total joint experience required
• Understanding of:
  • PCA pumps
  • Reversal agents (e.g., Narcan)
  • Sepsis management
  • TPN and lipids
  • Narcotic administration/use
• Experience with IV antibiotics and post-op surgical care

Drips / Medications

• Heparin titration required
• Titrated per protocol

Telemetry

• Tele monitor tech available
• RNs required to interpret strips
• Monitor system: Draeger

Charge Nurse / House Supervisor

• Day shift: charge nurse usually a Blessing staff nurse
• Nights: may function as house supervisor
• Charge nurse carries a reduced assignment to assist unit needs

CNA / Support Staff

• Nurse aides available
• May be pulled as sitters
• More CNA support on night shift

Respiratory / Equipment

• CPAP (home units)
• Airvo possible
• BiPAP occasionally (stays on unit)
• RT manages respiratory equipment

Scheduling

• 3x12 hour shifts, starting at 0700
• No guaranteed block scheduling
• Schedules posted 6 weeks in advance
• Discuss scheduling needs with leadership

Weekend / Holiday Requirements

• Every other weekend (Sat/Sun both shifts)
• Holiday rotation with core staff

Call / Standby

• None

Floating

• Float to like units only
• If floated to higher acuity: assist role only, no patient assignment

Orientation

• 1 shift (12 hours) on unit of hire
• First day: 12–14 hours (competencies, modules, general orientation)
