Earthmover Tire Technician (also known as Off-the-Road or OTR Tire Technician) specializes in servicing large, heavy-duty tires used on earthmoving equipment, mining machinery, construction vehicles, and other off-road heavy equipment. These tires are massive (often giant-sized) and require specialized skills, tools, and safety protocols.

Job Summary

Off-the-Road Tire Technicians perform tire and wheel services—including mounting, demounting, balancing, repairing, and inspecting—at customer job sites, mines, construction locations, or in a shop. They ensure equipment uptime by maintaining tires on heavy machinery while prioritizing safety and efficiency. The role often involves mobile/field service and physically demanding work.

Key Responsibilities

• Inspect tires on heavy equipment for wear, damage, cuts, punctures, sidewall issues, or other defects.
• Dismount, mount, repair, balance, and inflate OTR tires (including multi-piece rims such as 3-piece, 5-piece, or double gutter assemblies).
• Perform tire changes, rotations, and repairs on-site or in-shop using specialized tools and tire-handling equipment.
• Diagnose tire-related problems, recommend repairs or replacements, and note other needed vehicle services.
• Operate safely and maintain tire inspection/maintenance programs.
• Adhere to strict health, safety, and environmental protocols (including MSHA standards in mining environments).
• Organize work sites, vehicles, tools, and equipment for efficiency and safety.
• Drive service trucks to remote job sites for repairs and service calls.
• Maintain a clean work area and perform basic equipment maintenance.
• Provide excellent customer service and communicate effectively with supervisors and clients.

Requirements and Qualifications

• Education : High school diploma or GED; associate degree or technical certification preferred.
• Experience : 1–3 years in tire service, preferably with OTR/heavy equipment or commercial tires. Entry-level positions with training may be available.
• Certifications : TIA (Tire Industry Association) Earthmover Tire Service (ETS) certification, MSHA certification (for mining), or equivalent safety/training credentials are often required or highly preferred.
• Physical Abilities : Ability to lift heavy objects (e.g., 35+ kg / 80+ lbs), work in physically demanding environments, and handle extreme weather or site conditions.
• Skills :
• • Mechanical aptitude and knowledge of tire construction, repair techniques, and rim assemblies.
  • Safe operation of tools, jacks, tire machines, and heavy equipment.
  • Attention to detail for inspections and repairs.
  • Valid driver’s license (often CDL or heavy vehicle endorsement required).
  • Teamwork and communication skills.
• Other : Willingness to work rotational shifts, overtime, weekends, or in remote locations. Background checks and drug screening are common.
