University Counsel

Organization: The UAB Health System is owned by the University of Alabama System, operating as its academic medical and health care enterprise. UAB Health System is one of the nation’s premier academic medical centers and a cornerstone of the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Anchored by UAB Hospital, the UAB Health System encompasses approximately 15 hospitals, numerous outpatient clinics, and a broad network of affiliated entities. As an academic medical center, UAB integrates patient care, education, and research while operating in a highly complex and regulated healthcare environment. Position Overview Reporting to the General Counsel of UAB Health System, the University Counsel will serve as a key legal advisor to the Health System, its hospitals, clinics, and affiliated entities. This role provides sophisticated legal support across healthcare transactions, regulatory compliance, and operational matters, partnering closely with executive leadership and cross‑functional stakeholders. The position is hands‑on and requires sound judgment, confidence, and the ability to operate independently in a fast‑paced academic medical center setting. Experience The successful candidate will have at least seven (7) years of relevant healthcare legal experience, ideally gained at a well‑regarded law firm and/or within a health system or similarly regulated organization. Law firm training is viewed as a strong foundation for success in this role. Location/Relocation This is a fully on‑site position based in Birmingham, Alabama. Relocation assistance may be available in accordance with UA System policies. Occasional local or overnight travel may be required.
