The Team


The Facilities and Custodial teams play a crucial role in supporting all aspects of the Oregon Humane Society. Through cross departmental communications and interactions, we ensure a safe and healthy environment for staff, volunteers, donors, the general public, and any and all vendors who find themselves on our ever expanding campus.


The Position


The custodial lead assists in the implementation of organizational and departmental policies, procedures, and protocols in order to ensure the highest possible degree of care and safety in caring for the OHS facilities, employees, and tenants. The custodial lead must facilitate collaborative and helpful interactions between the staff, volunteers, and public; assists in the selection, hiring, performance appraisal, and management of assigned staff members. Promotes a safe, collaborative, team centered working environment. Additional responsibilities include documenting completed paperwork in an accurate and timely manner, providing information relating to the work of the custodial team, requesting supplies/equipment utilized by or purchased for the custodial team.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Adhere to all OHS personnel policies and procedures.
  • Promote team development and assist in resolving and mitigating conflicts. Role model professionalism and mutual respect to staff at all times.
  • Ensure that all daily custodial tasks and monthly OSU dorm assignments are completed in a thorough and timely manner. Monitor quality of work performed by assigned staff and offer feedback for improvement or correct behavior as needed. Monitor the progress and completion of special projects as assigned.
  • Report performance concerns, staffing shortages, and/or morale issues to the facilities supervisor in a timely, impartial, and accurate manner.
  • Perform custodial duties and responsibilities as a mentor and teammate.
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and training of department policies and procedures.
  • Monitor clients and tours through the shelter on a daily basis, prioritizing special needs as required and escalating concerns as appropriate.
  • Ensure that custodial processes and projects occur according to schedule and quality requirements.
  • Be knowledgeable and skilled in custodial processes while accurately recording and relaying information.
  • Greet and interact with memorial service clients and visitors in a friendly, professional, and respectful manner at all times. Work with the public, staff, and volunteers to resolve concerns and questions in a productive and collaborative manner.
  • Monitor and assess the facility's' condition throughout the OHS campus. Communicate conditions and project work with the facilities supervisor.
  • Monitor equipment, supply, and storage inventories and complete required documentation. Ensure that supplies and equipment are used correctly, kept clean and well maintained, and inventory is adequately maintained.
  • Conduct regular inspections in order to proactively identify and correct all concerns noted.
  • Adhere to all OHS safety, injury reporting and training to ensure that OHSs' environment is safe for animals, volunteers, staff, and the public.
  • Wear required clothing, identification, and safety garments/equipment as defined by OHS policies and procedures.
  • Able to work weekends, evenings and holidays as requested.

Minimum Qualification & Transferable Skills

  • 1 year of Custodial experience.
  • Ability to be a mentor and lead to custodial crew.
  • Able to read and interpret communications and SOPs related to the work performed by the custodial team.
  • Able and willing to successfully complete Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) background check including a fingerprint.
  • Able to observe, record, and report unsafe working conditions and follow safety standards in working with multiple services, tools, and equipment.
  • Certified in CPR and first aid. Able to maintain certification throughout the course of employment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills - able to communicate with a diverse population in a consistently informative, confident, respectful and professional manner.
  • Able to set goals, prioritize, delegate work, and provide feedback to others in order to complete multiple tasks on or before deadline.
  • Able to demonstrate a high degree of independence, initiative, and organization skills.
  • Able to effectively respond to changes in department workflow and demonstrate sound judgment while providing support services.
  • Able to demonstrate exceptional discretion, judgment, integrity, and confidentiality when dealing with personnel issues and proprietary information.
  • Willing to learn new tasks and able to become proficient in a short period of time.
  • Able to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as requested.
  • Able to maintain a valid driver's license and provide proof of auto insurance.
  • Able to exercise sound judgment and maintain a professional demeanor during all interactions with the public, partner agencies, donors, staff and volunteers.
Preferred
  • 1+ year(s) team lead experience.
  • Fluent in verbal/written Spanish
Work Environment Conditions & Physical Requirements


This position interacts and collaborates will all levels of the organization, including Oregon Humane staff, executive team members, donors, general public, external vendors, volunteers, and supporters. Contact and communication is carried out through face-to-face, telephone and digital interactions. Excellent customer service skills are essential to success. Communication must be clear, understandable, professional and respectful in all circumstances.


WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Work is performed in an office and medical center/animal shelter environment.
  • Travel between the two campuses may be required.
  • Working at both campuses may be required.
  • Occasional weekend and evening work may be required.
  • Animal contact and related injuries may occur.
  • Noise exposure varies and sometimes includes uncontrolled barking and other animal vocalizations.
  • Pace of work is active and demanding, requiring a high degree of multitasking and ability to adapt to changing priorities while managing concurrent projects/tasks to completion.
  • Contact with angry or emotional people may occur.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Occasional lifting and moving of inanimate objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Occasional pushing and pulling of carted items weighing up to 100 lbs.
  • Occasional moving items above shoulder level.
  • Occasional use of hands and arms at or above shoulder level.
  • Prolonged standing, sitting and/or stooping may occur.
  • Occasional climbing and bending.
  • Must be able to lift, move, restrain, guide, or manage an animal weighing up to 150 lbs. on a leash on an occasional basis.
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position for prolonged periods.
  • Ability to respond and perform life saving techniques in an emergency.
