Position Overview

Reliable, safety-conscious entry-level Wet Utility Pipe Helper (Top Man) needed for heavy civil and underground utility crews on municipal projects across Maryland, D.C., Northern Virginia, and Delaware. Assist pipelayers and Foreman with material handling, trench support, signaling, and site preparation for water main, sanitary sewer, and storm drain work. Ideal entry point to learn the trade and advance to Pipelayer.

Key Responsibilities

• Stage pipe, fittings, bedding, and materials at the trench edge; keep work area organized and free of hazards.
• Signal excavator operators and trench crew for safe pipe placement and alignment.
• Assist with trench bottom preparation, bedding placement, and grade checks under direction.
• Hand tools, gaskets, lubricant, restraint, and fittings to the Tail Man / Pipelayer.
• Assist with trench boxes, shoring, safe entry/exit, and maintain trench safety awareness.
• Support backfill, compaction, and cleanup around installed pipe.
• Learn basic grade stakes, cut sheets, and plan details under guidance.
• Maintain tools/equipment; immediately report shortages, damage, or safety concerns.
• Follow all company safety protocols, PPE rules, and site-specific requirements.

Requirements

• Willingness to learn wet utility installation; prior construction labor or flagging experience required (pipe-laying experience preferred).
• Outdoor work year-round, including trenches, weather extremes, and confined spaces (with training).
• Physical ability to lift/carry 50–75 lbs repeatedly, bend, kneel, climb, and stand for extended periods.
• Reliable transportation to regional job sites; valid driver’s license preferred.
• Ability to follow instructions; good communication and teamwork.
• Commitment to safety; complete OSHA 10 and company training. Flagger certification preferred.
• Pass pre-employment drug screen and background check.

Physical & Work Environment

Full-time field role. Outdoor construction environments with weather, noise, dust, and heavy equipment. Travel between regional sites. Overtime and early starts common.
