Position Purpose
This entry-level position supports the research mission of a laboratory dedicated to analyzing retrieved orthopedic implants, including hip, knee, shoulder, and ankle devices. The laboratory's central purpose is to evaluate these devices to determine whether they performed as expected in service. It also conducts research funded by NIH and similar government grants, as well as under contracts with medical device original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). Working under close supervision and following established methods, the Laboratory Technician I performs routine experiments, tests, and laboratory duties in support of these research efforts. The position is well suited to an individual beginning a career in laboratory or biomedical research who is detail-oriented, dependable, and committed to careful documentation and laboratory safety. Proficiency with common computer software is necessary.

Required Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent.

• Careful attention to detail and a commitment to accurate, thorough record-keeping.
• Ability to follow established protocols precisely and to ask questions when instructions are unclear.
• Commitment to laboratory safety and to adhering to Dartmouth EHS regulations and good documentation practices.
• Ability to work both independently on assigned tasks and collaboratively as part of a research team.
• Basic quantitative and computer skills sufficient to record, organize, and present data.
• Ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Demonstrated ability to complete projects.

Preferred Qualifications

• Associate's degree in a technical or laboratory field; or one to two years of experience working in a laboratory; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Familiarity with general laboratory practices, measurement, and documentation.
• Exposure to metrology, microscopy, mechanical testing, or materials characterization is a plus but not required.
• Proficiency with common computer software (word processing, spreadsheets, data entry).
• Familiarity with computer programming, mathematical modeling, and data analysis.

Experiments - 50% of time
* Conducts specified laboratory experiments and tests on retrieved orthopedic implants using established methods, procedures, and techniques. * Accomplishes necessary preparation and setup of equipment and instrumentation for experiments. * Adheres to established quality control policies and procedures to ensure the reliability and integrity of data. * Observes experiments in progress, records observations accurately, and troubleshoots routine issues as they arise. * Notifies the Sr. Engineer of problems associated with experiments, measurements, or analyses. * Maintains a complete and legible laboratory notebook, recording all tasks performed. * Adheres to laboratory safety requirements, including general safety and chemical/hazardous-waste handling and disposal methods.


Records - 20% of time
* Collects and analyzes data resulting from experiments and presents findings to the Sr. Engineer. * Prepares clear and understandable representations of data, such as graphs, charts, tables, and statistical summaries. * Contributes to the preparation of scientific manuscripts by preparing graphs, tables, and charts. * Conducts literature searches to build understanding of experimental results and to identify new or improved methods, procedures, and techniques.


Laboratory - 20% of time
* Performs day-to-day care and housekeeping of the laboratory, including cleaning, restocking, inventory, and organization of storage and work areas. * Checks, calibrates, and maintains equipment in working order, performing preventative maintenance at prescribed intervals. * Maintains records associated with laboratory activities, both digital and print. * Instructs others in laboratory methods, procedures, and techniques as experience allows, and provides technical guidance as required.


Miscellaneous - 10% of time
* Establishes and maintains effective communication and positive working relationships with staff at all levels, co-workers, and students. * Self-motivated; proactively engages with team members and contributes to a supportive laboratory environment. * Demonstrates professionalism and collegiality through actions, interactions, and communications appropriate to an environment that is welcoming to all. * Performs other duties as assigned.
