POSITION SUMMARY Under the general direction of the Histology laboratory manager, performs a wide variety of laboratory tests and procedures of moderate complexity (histology and immunohistochemistry), as defined by CLIA ’88, in a diagnostic laboratory. Makes detailed observations, analyzes data, and records results. Duties include performing microtomy on various types of surgical specimens and tissue preparation of frozen sections. Performs standard hematoxylin and eosin–stained tissue sections, and special histochemical stains, chromogenic and fluorescent dyes, and in situ hybridization. Maintains laboratory equipment and inventory levels for laboratory suppliers. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES Perform routine and special paraffin sections of surgical and autopsy tissue for microscopic examination in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Prepare equipment for processing, embedding, cutting, complex staining, and mounting tissue. Perform muscle biopsies, nerve biopsies, histochemical and other histopathological laboratory tests and examinations to obtain data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Provide technical guidance to laboratory personnel as required. Perform histological preparation and procedures on tissue in order to aid cell pathology. Maintain logs and prepare regular and special reports on procedures for specific tissue. Train other histology technicians on procedures and equipment. Operate and maintain automated tissue staining equipment and automated coverslippers. Perform microtomy on small biopsies and minute specimens for extended panels. Prepare chemicals (mix, dilute, reconstitute solutions, reagents, stains, etc.) to maintain adequate supplies of special histologic and histochemical stains. Prepare buffers and fixatives; label slides. Insure compliance with quality control standards as described in laboratory procedure manual for use in staining techniques pertaining to histology and cytology. Ensure chemicals are disposed of according to hospital guidelines. May cross‑train in other areas of pathology and/or other laboratory departments (electron microscopy, frozen section service, special pathology). Process fresh and fixed tissue specimens for surgical, anatomical, and investigative histology preparations under supervision. File specimen blocks and glass slides for additional review and send out testing. Assist in the preparation and performance of human surgical specimen dissection, including accessioning, gross description, fixation and processing. Receive and process tissues or blood samples to prepare specimens for microscopic review. Use computer system; understand application of accessioning and histology section of CoPath software (running log sheets, verification, entering patient demographics, etc.). Calibrate and maintain laboratory equipment. Record test results and prepare control slides. Cleans, washes, and stores laboratory supplies, equipment, and work area to ensure proper chemical safety and infection control. Inform group leader or supervisor when consumable supplies require replenishing. Perform preventative maintenance and QC documentation of laboratory activities and equipment. Complete training and maintain competency in Media Lab and Workday. Record statistical data (e.g., number of cases, blocks, slides, stains) daily. Undertake laboratory data management (specimen log‑in, filing and tracking). Maintain specimen accession file in compliance with regulatory agency requirements and provide test results and related information to authorized personnel verbally or in writing, as required. Participate in the research and development of new procedures and stains as they relate to the improvement of diagnostic testing, under the direction of the supervisor and/or group leader. Attend departmental continuing education classes. OTHER DUTIES Interact with medical staff and co‑workers effectively and professionally. Undertake specimen delivery and mail delivery as necessary. Perform clerical duties such as answering telephone, filing, recording data in computer database, and recording information on cytology and/or flow cytometry specimens. Utilize hospital's behavioral standards to facilitate the department and the hospital's mission and goals. JOB REQUIREMENTS Education: High school diploma required; Bachelor’s degree or Associate’s degree in a clinical laboratory science, biological or health science preferred. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Histotechnician HT(ASCP) or Histotechnologist HTL (ASCP) certification or eligibility is preferred but not required. Experience: Minimum of three years in a pathology laboratory that includes specimen processing; minimum two to three years in embedding tissue and microtomy including small biopsy. Histochemical staining procedure experience is preferred. Knowledge and Skills: Excellent oral and written communication skills; strong knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology; basic computer proficiency with ability to access, enter, and interpret computerized data/information; experience with CoPath software a plus; demonstrate accuracy in preparing, staining and mounting tissue sections. COMPENSATION RANGE $29.95 – $39.52 per hour. This range is an estimate based on minimum job qualifications.
