We succeed together. What the Role Entails Lightspeed LA is seeking a Senior Combat Designer to lead and drive Player 3Cs and enemy combatants for our AAA open world project. In this role, you will report to the Lead Combat Designer who has oversight on combat, vehicles, and systems design. You will lead a team of combat designers and feature pods to realize our combat vision and push for excellence in processes, best practices, and quality. To achieve this vision, you will work closely with leads and members from disciplines including Engineering, Animation, Narrative, Mission, Ambient World, Character Art, VFX, SFX, and Production. Drive combat gameplay features and content from initial concepts through specs, implementation, iteration, and completion. Vision holder of our Player 3Cs and combat mechanics. Vision holder of high-level combat gameplay goals for enemy factions and combat roles for enemy combatants. Collaborate closely with Mission and Ambient World teams to anticipate and solve problems that arise during content creation for their respective domains. Work closely with production partners and other leads to create road maps and milestone/sprint goals for combat features and content. Represent the combat team to various disciplines as the go-to person for solutions and manage their expectations. Hands-on design and implementation of features and content and set examples for other combat designers to follow. Mentor and manage combat designers. Depending on the candidate’s strengths and interests, this role can be solely contribution-focused as a principal designer or with additional management duty as a lead designer. Either role will require hands-on contribution in designing and implementing features and content. Who We Look For 5+ years of experience in combat design, including senior, principal, or lead experience. Extensive experience in tuning and balancing firearms. Extensive experience and grasp at crafting melee combat gameplay, animation timing, and feel. Extensive experience in design, implementation, troubleshooting, and tuning of Player 3Cs, traversal, and combat mechanics. Extensive experience in design, implementation, troubleshooting, and tuning of enemy combatants and AI behaviors. Must be fluent with Unreal Editor and Blueprint scripting; text-based scripting experience is a plus. Must have experience in collaborating with animators to create gameplay-friendly animations that strike the right balance between fidelity, fluidity, and responsiveness. Experience in designing combat gameplay based on mo-cap performances; experience in directing mo-cap performance is a plus. Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey difficult and abstract concepts to all disciplines. Preferred Qualifications Possess extensive knowledge of competing products and a deep understanding of the complex overlap between combat and open world gameplay systems. Actual pay is based on market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. A sign-on payment, relocation package, and restricted stock units may be provided as part of the compensation package, as well as other medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the specific position offered.
