Forward Deployed Engineer, AI Labs

Responsibilities

• Build and ship production-grade AI products end-to-end, from problem framing and data pipeline design through deployment and live iteration.
• Work closely with customers to understand constraints and rapidly develop scalable agentic solutions.
• Lead technical scoping workshops and interface directly with city leaders on local problems.
• Contribute to tools involving data consolidation, predictive modeling, real-time decision-making, and LLM-powered experiences.
• Collaborate with product, data science, and operations teams to prioritize high-impact AI opportunities.
• Write scalable backend and frontend code, design APIs, manage data flows, and ensure reliable performance at scale.
• Help establish AI Labs’ technical culture, development practices, and engineering standards.
• Evaluate and introduce new AI development tools, ideas, and approaches.

Requirements

• At least 5 years of hands-on experience building full-stack applications and owning features end-to-end.
• At least 3 years of experience working with AI tools or building AI-powered products.
• Deep expertise across LLMs, predictive modeling, and supporting data infrastructure.
• Strong backend engineering skills, including scalable API design, distributed systems, and maintainable production code.
• Ability to work effectively in ambiguous, early-stage environments and take ownership independently.
• Strong cross-functional communication skills and intellectual curiosity about emerging AI approaches.
• Comfort working directly with users and customers and traveling for on-site collaboration.
