Summary
The Experienced Vehicle Maintenance Mechanic independently diagnoses, repairs, and maintains Loveland Ski Area's diverse fleet of buses, snowcats, heavy equipment, snowmobiles, ATVs/UTVs, trailers, and support vehicles. This position performs advanced troubleshooting, mentors less experienced mechanics, and participates in snow stake assessments and snow removal operations to support safe and efficient mountain operations. This position plays a key role in maintaining equipment reliability and operational readiness through technical expertise, quality workmanship, and a commitment to safety. Essential Functions
- Independently diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, electronic, and diesel emissions systems, including complete Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) overhauls.
- Perform advanced preventive maintenance and major component repairs.
- Troubleshoot and resolve difficult equipment failures involving mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, fuel, electronic, and emissions systems
- Provide technical guidance, mentoring, and on-the-job training to Apprentice, Mechanic 1 (and Mechanic 2) employees.
- Participate in early morning snow stake assessments and independently operate snow removal equipment as needed to help ensure parking lots, roadways, and guest access areas are safely prepared for daily operations.
- Maintain accurate work orders, inspection reports, maintenance records, repair documentation, and recommend equipment improvements.
- Ensure compliance with DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, environmental regulations, and applicable diesel emissions standards.
- Coordinate with vendors, manufacturers, and outside repair facilities regarding parts, repairs, warranty claims, and technical support.
- May assist other departments with projects, operational support, and special assignments as business needs dictate.
Level 3 Mechanic will perform all of the above and will also perform more advanced/complex maintenance, leading major repairs, overhauls, fabrication projects and component replacements; inspect the work of others and recommend correction actions; and will provide filed leadership, as needed.
Requirements:- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of three (3) years for Level 2, and five (5) years for Level 3 of progressively responsible experience performing preventive maintenance, diagnostics, inspections, and repairs on fleet vehicles, diesel engines, heavy equipment, buses, or related mechanical systems, or an equivalent combination of technical education, vocational training, military service, and related experience. Preferred AAS in mechanical technologies or two years experience as a shop or field mechanic.
- Demonstrated experience independently troubleshooting and repairing mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, fuel, brake, steering, suspension, drivetrain, and cooling system issues on a variety of vehicles and equipment.
- Experience performing major component repairs, including engine, transmission, hydraulic, and drivetrain systems.
- Experience utilizing computerized diagnostic equipment, manufacturer service information, electronic repair manuals, and computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
- Experience performing preventive maintenance planning and identifying equipment deficiencies to improve fleet reliability and reduce downtime.
- Experience operating and maintaining snow removal equipment, heavy equipment, or similar equipment is preferred.
- Experience mentoring, training, or providing technical guidance to less experienced mechanics, is preferred.
- Experience maintaining or repairing a diverse fleet of vehicles and equipment, such as buses, pickup trucks, heavy equipment, snowcats, snowmobiles, ATVs/UTVs, trailers, or similar equipment is strongly preferred.
- Possession of (or ability to obtain) a valid Colorado Driver’s License, with an acceptable driving record.
- Advanced mechanical aptitude with the ability to independently diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair complex mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, fuel, brake, steering, suspension, drivetrain, and cooling system issues on a diverse fleet of vehicles and equipment. Thorough knowledge of preventive maintenance principles, equipment reliability practices, and manufacturer-recommended service procedures.
- Proficiency in using hand tools, power tools, shop equipment, welding equipment, precision measuring instruments, and computerized diagnostic equipment.
- Ability to respond effectively to equipment failures and changing operational priorities in a fast-paced mountain environment.
- Strong knowledge of diesel engines, small engines, and bus components. Knowledge and understanding of electrical and hydraulic schematics.
- Ability to read, interpret, and apply technical manuals, wiring diagrams, hydraulic schematics, electronic service information, and manufacturer specifications.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify root causes of equipment failures and recommend effective corrective actions.
- Ability to prioritize multiple repair assignments while maintaining quality workmanship and minimizing equipment downtime.
- Demonstrated attention to detail and commitment to producing safe, accurate, and reliable repairs.
- Working knowledge of DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, environmental regulations, and company safety policies as they relate to fleet maintenance operations.
- Ability to mentor, train, coach, and provide technical guidance to Apprentice and Mechanic I employees while promoting teamwork, accountability, technical skill development, and safe work practices.
- Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers, supervisors, vendors, and other departments regarding equipment status, repair priorities, and maintenance recommendations.
- Ability to adapt to changing operational priorities, including responding to emergency equipment failures, severe weather events, and early morning snow removal operations.
- Commitment to continuous learning and staying current with evolving vehicle technology, diagnostic equipment, and industry best practices.
- Ability to lead by example while promoting accountability, professionalism, and safe work practices.
- Thorough understanding of diesel engine diagnostics, emissions systems, and complete Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) overhaul procedures.
- Ability to diagnose and repair aftertreatment systems, including DPF, DOC, DEF, and SCR components.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook for email communication and scheduling. Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel for completing maintenance-related documentation, reviewing reports, and maintaining records.
- Proficiency using computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), fleet maintenance software, work order systems, and electronic timekeeping systems.
- Ability to accurately document inspections, diagnostics, repairs, preventive maintenance, and parts usage in electronic maintenance records.
- Proficiency using manufacturer diagnostic software, scan tools, electronic service manuals, wiring diagrams, and online parts catalogs to diagnose and repair a variety of vehicles and equipment.
- Ability to retrieve, interpret, and apply technical service bulletins, software updates, and manufacturer repair procedures.
- Ability to research technical information and utilize computer-based resources to troubleshoot complex mechanical and electrical issues; to train and assist other employees in the use of shop software, computerized diagnostics, and electronic maintenance systems; to safely operate fleet vehicles, heavy equipment, and snow removal equipment appropriate to the position and level of training..
- Ability to communicate clearly in English, both verbally and in writing, including the ability to speak, understand, read, and write effectively.
- Ability to lift, carry, push/pull up to 100 pounds and work in indoor and outdoor environments subject to varying weather conditions.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining an elevated level of productivity and quality workmanship.
- Physically demanding position, often performing heavy lifting, pushing, pulling in adverse weather conditions at high altitude.
Level 3 Mechanic requires all of the above and advanced/expert mechanical skills and experience, related certifications, experience leading work and other team members, and experience with more complex maintenance and repair work.
