Hospice Companion Volunteers

Hospice volunteers are an important part of the Penn Medicine Hospice care team, providing companionship and meaningful support to patients and families during the end-of-life journey.

As a Hospice Companion Volunteer , you will be matched with a hospice patient in the Lower Bucks County area based on location, availability, and patient needs. Volunteers provide a comforting presence through conversation, companionship, reading, playing games, listening to music, or simply spending time together. Volunteers may also provide caregiver relief by sitting with a patient while their caregiver takes a short break.

This is a companionship role and does not involve hands-on medical or personal care.

Volunteer Activities May Include:

• Providing friendly conversation and companionship
• Reading, listening to music, playing games, or participating in activities based on the patient's interests
• Offering a supportive and compassionate presence
• Providing short periods of caregiver relief through companionship
• Communicating appropriately with the Volunteer Department regarding visits and assignments
• Documenting volunteer visits according to program guidelines

What We're Looking For:

No previous hospice or healthcare experience is required. We are looking for dependable, compassionate individuals who are comfortable spending time with patients and families and understand the importance of respecting privacy, personal preferences, and boundaries.

All volunteers complete the Penn Medicine Hospice onboarding process, including required health documentation, background screening, volunteer orientation, and a supervised competency visit before being matched with a patient.

Volunteers must be at least 18 years old.

Patient assignments are based on current patient needs, volunteer availability, and geographic location.
